Valley of the Fallen
Valley of the Fallen is a Francoist regime monument, Catholic basilica and a monumental memorial in the municipality of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected at Cuelgamuros Valley in the Sierra de Guadarrama, near Madrid. Franco claimed that the monument was meant to be a "national act of atonement" and reconciliation. The construction works mainly involved free workers and a smaller, albeit significant, percentage of prisoners, these between 1942 and 1950, under the regime of redemption of sentences.
Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial
San Lorenzo de El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Arriba is a town and municipality in the Community of Madrid, Spain, located to the northwest of the region in the southeastern side of the Sierra de Guadarrama, at the foot of Mount Abantos and Las Machotas, 47 kilometres (29 mi) from Madrid. It is head of the same name judicial party. The settlement is popularly called El Escorial de Arriba, to differentiate it from the neighbouring village of El Escorial, also known as El Escorial de Abajo. Felipe II ordered the construction of this Monastery in recognition of the victory of San Quintín, which took place on the day of San Lorenzo in 1557 and is from the King, to erect a mausoleum in memory of his parents and himself, placed under the invocation of Saint Lawrence.

5.00Beatrice and Michelangelo provided a fantastic experience for my daughter and me. Beatrice is lovely- here are a few things that stood out about her. She clearly loves history of Spain and the heritage of Spain. Her way of conveying the kings, queens, the belief in religion, made me see Spain in a completely different light. And to top it off she is FUNNY!!! 🤣🤣Her phrasing made me lol especially when she was talking about familial lineage and Don Juan. We weren’t able to get in the inner part of Valley of the Fallen cos of Easter and she definitely made a case. She took our photos and generally a good , informative time was had 😎😍

5.00Loved the experience with our guide Beatrice and bus driver Michelangel. Everything was handled professionally and the explanations in both Spanish and English were really detailed. Beatrice does a really good job at leading the group. The visit length and group size was just right.
If you want to see El Escorial through a lens of brilliance and expertise, this guide is an absolute must-book.

Our guide possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the 16th century, yet delivered it with the flair of a storyteller. Whether discussing the somber beauty of the Basilica or the intricate details of the Royal Library, they managed to make the walls speak. Unlike standard tours, our guide went beyond dates and names, diving into the why behind Philip II's architectural choices. They had an incredible sense of the group’s energy, knowing exactly when to linger in the Pantheon of Kings and when to move toward the lighter, sun-drenched courtyards. The tour was peppered with subtle humor and "insider" anecdotes that you simply won't find in a guidebook. The true mark of a great guide is the ability to handle a site as massive and imposing as El Escorial without making it feel overwhelming.
