Without a doubt the best and most popular Shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture is the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. It is dedicated to the God of Learning and as such is busy all through the year with many student visitors coming here to pray for upcoming success in their educational endeavors, especially during examination time at various periods during the year. 6000 or so Plum Trees have been planted on the site and they begin to bloom around early February to early March. Of course the Cherry Blossoms are also unique to the area and it must be added that during Autumn the leaf changing season of the incredible beautiful Japanese Maple Trees are exceptional and worth a to visit the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine in mid to late November. The entrance to the shrine is a long street lined with small stalls filled with local specialities, a variety of food and drinks and of course many different types of souvenirs that one can take back home after their travels in Japan.
Nanzoin Temple
Situated in the remote countryside on the outskirts of Fukuoka City, is one of the most remarkable places you will find called Nanzoin Temple. I have been to hundreds of ho hum temples all over Japan but without a doubt this location has been absolutely the most amazing place you could hope to visit. The Nanzoin Temple is home to the largest reclining buddha in Japan and possibly the world. The actual dimensions of the statue are 41 metres long by 11 metres in height and it weighs in at 300 tons, so as you can see, it isn't small! A Reclining Buddha is a relatively rare site in Japan as most are sitting or standing. Sitting indicates that the Buddha is meditating whilst the reclining pose represents the fact that the Buddha is just about to die and enter the state of Nirvana. This state is much more common in South East Asian countries such as Thailand and Laos, so we have discovered a rare find here in the rural confines of Fukuoka.

We had a fantastic time with Shannon. He is a wonderful guide, driver & is considerate of the elderly. We had great converations & learnt alot during the car rides. Other than the wet morning (which is no fault of his), the day, the sightseeing & lunch was perfect.

Shannon is an Australian guide who lives already a long time in Japan and speaks fluent Japanese. We did a tour with him both in Nagasaki and Fukuoka while being on a cruise with the Celebrity Millennium. We really enjoyed every minute. Shannon drives you to all the interesting spots with his own car and also gives you a lot of information. We liked the tours a lot, especially since these are private tours, made to measure and not with the big busses as other tours tend to be. Shannon feels very good where you want to spend more or less time. As said we enjoyed every minute of this informative and fun tours! If we would be in the region again we would immediately book again.

Shannon is an outstanding guide and we highly recommend him for English speaking tours of Japan. His knowledge of Japanese history and culture provided us with keen insights into Japanese life and its similarities and pronounced differences with western culture and perspectives. Our tours with Shannon were truly wonderful Experiences and we will definitely book him on future tours when we return to Japan .

It was an excellent tour. Shannon was well prepared for the trip. He asked me about what we want to see/visit in the tour and proposed a customized itinerary for me to review. Since we wanted to see fall foliage in this tour, he checked out the various places before the tour day to make sure that we can see the fall colors (we were about one to two weeks too early). He also included some interesting places (e.g., sake brewery, farmers market) that are not in regular tours. He is a great driver, guide, cook, interpreter and photographer. We also have great conversations during the trip and I learned a lot more about Japanese history and culture. After the trip, he sent us all the photos/videos that he took in the trip. One more thing that Shannon did beyond his "call of duty" for us: We tried to email an ryokan in Kurokawa to confirm some matters about our upcoming stay but did not get any email replies. I asked Shannon to call them about such matters. He did it and followed up promptly. Thank you very much for your help, Shannon. Overall, I highly recommend Shannon for any tours in the Fukuoka area. I will definitely ask him to help me with tours when I visit Kyushu in the future.

This was a fantastic tour, and we are so glad we did it. We would not have been able to see half as much if we had not had Shannon driving us around. He will make recommendations, or work with whatever places you want to go. It was such a hot day, and Shannon made sure we walked the least amount possible, stayed hydrated, and had the AC blasting when in the car. We learned so much more about the history and everything we saw, and ate. Since it is a private tour, the flexibility of what we wanted to do was great. In the end, we did some stops at Uniqlo, GU and other great shops that we wanted (but would have been too lazy to get there on our own due to the extreme heat) for some awesome shopping at fantastic prices. This is something we definitely could not have done on a bigger group tour. He's not only a great driver, he also gets out and walks with you to be your guide, your photographer, or your interpreter, which was super helpful. After we got back from our vacation, Shannon even put together a video of all the things we did the whole day as a nice keepsake! That was super duper awesome, never had a guide do that before. We would totally hire and use him again in the future should we ever return again to the area.
