We visited Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary in December 2025, and it was one of the standout experiences of our holiday. If you have any interest in big cats, conservation, or simply learning something new, this place is an absolute must. The tigers, lions, and pumas were the highlight for us. Seeing these incredible animals up close, relaxed, healthy, and clearly well cared for, was unforgettable. Each enclosure is spacious, thoughtfully designed, and focused on the animals’ wellbeing rather than entertainment, which we really appreciated. Our tour guide was exceptional. Knowledgeable, passionate, and engaging from start to finish, they brought each animal’s story to life and gave us a deeper understanding of the sanctuary’s conservation work. It made the experience feel meaningful, not just enjoyable. The facilities were excellent too: clean, well‑maintained, and easy to navigate. Everything felt organized and professional, which added to the overall experience. Jukani is doing important work, and visiting felt both inspiring and educational. Highly recommended for families, animal lovers, and anyone travelling along the Garden Route.

That’s a toughs score and may not be fair? The tour was good, although the ranger got a puma fact wrong. We went because it was a grey cool day and we were looking for things to do. If they are all rescue animals as promised and have contraception to prevent breeding then places need to exist like this and be supported. However, the pacing tiger suggests boredom and the lone painted dog that needs sending to join others in a pack just does not feel like they are trying hard enough to do what’s best for the animals? So we left feeling slightly uneasy as to whether we had supported a very worthwhile cause; or aided an attraction?

What a fantastic job they do there to take care of these animals. Many come from private property and have often had very bad experiences. They were kept as pets until they became too big and/or too dangerous. Others were used to breed “ illegally”. Contact with humans prevents them from returning to nature. They would not survive that because they do not know how to deal with species and often do not have a well-developed hunting instinct. Here at Jukani the animals can grow old, enjoy peace, good care and often much more space than where they came from. They are therefore mostly somewhat older animals. What to see: lions and lionesses (including the white one), Bengal and Siberian tiger, hyena, wild dog, caracal, leopard, jaguar, black panther, serval, jack neck, honey badger, puma Racoon and cheetah If possible, go to Jukani when it is cloudy, then the animals are a bit more active. On a nice hot day they also enjoy the warmth and are less active

First we had a normal guided tour at Jukani. But that evening we also had a diner at Jukani. It’s a combination of a diner at the Boma and a night safari. The experience was amazing. A very good 3 course menu and a night safari with active animals like lion, tiger, wild dog, hyena, caracal etc. You have to book in advance. they have limited days and must have a certain minimum amount of guests. But if you are able to join you should do it

The animals all looked completely bored, it was so sad. Although the guide said they rescue animals from zoos etc that are closing or individuals who shouldn't have the animals in the first place it felt just like a zoo. The animals have no stimulation and are basically existing. Very disappointed. Torn between recommending people don't waste their money on a ticket verses at least that money feeds the animals to allow them to survive.

After going on many real safaris in national parks in Botswana, Namibia, Kenya, South Africa, seeing these so-called sanctuaries that, under the guise of safeguarding species and individual animals, are nothing more than zoos that do business by locking up poor beasts, put me in infinite sadness.... and even have the courage to call a visit to a zoo a safari..!! I would ban them..!!

We booked the Boma and night tour with wildcats. Our experience was good but there were quite a few frustrations. We arrived on time knowing the agenda for the evening, as did 2 other tables. However a group of ‘influencers’ turned up at 7.25pm which eventually delayed all of us by 30 minutes. The staff and team working on the day were completely distracted by these influencers, forgetting they had other paying guests to entertain. These influencers had cameras which certainly attracted the staff as they were basically marketing Jukani so they would benefit from it. The staff sat with the influencers all evening for dinner, completely forgetting other guests. At one point, I asked a waitress who they were, she said ‘they are influencers who have come from all over the world’. I then corrected her and said we have also come from the UK. At 9.25pm, our guide came over and asked if we had any questions, and we said ‘yes, when are we going on our tour of wildcats’. He said 9pm, but as he was so distracted, he was not aware of the time and we were delayed for over 30 minutes, so we started and finished the tour much later than expected. Disappointing experience because we too came from ‘all over the world’ and also paid for our tickets.
