Piazza San Pietro Caveoso
After enjoying breathtaking views and listening to the incredible and compelling story of the Sassi you will cross the most unspoiled area of the Sassi. You will also discover the less touristy corners and you will arrive in the most beautiful square of Sasso Caveoso, Piazza San Pietro, one of the most evocative panoramic points of the city.
Casa Cisterna Sotterranea
You will visit a typically furnished cave-house museum, a unique chance to see with your own eyes the unhealthy conditions in which local people lived in the cave dwellings of the Sassi until not so long ago. This is the key to understand the most controversial part of the history of Matera, when the city was called the national shame. A visit to the museum is also an opportunity to see an ancient cistern for collecting rainwater and understand the water collection system, one of the most interesting aspects of the city, which will be explained in detail by the guides.

Visiting the caves and museum was a very nice experience. Learning the history of the cave dwelling and how it became a unesco world heritage site.

We enjoyed our private tour with Vito. He took us to the less-touristy spots so that we could really get a feel for cave-culture and how the city has developed from 'shame of Italy' to UNESCO world heritage site. This was my aunt's favorite tour of our entire 2-week trip as she thought Vito was the most knowledgeable, but also knew how to answer a lot of questions we had. Matera is stunning and it's great to know some backstory but also where the spots of some famous films have been filmed :)

Vito, our tour guide is a local from the Matera area. His grandparents and father lived in the Sassi. His knowledge of the old Sassi was extraordinary. We actually got to go inside one of the original cave dwellings in the area. We learnt so much about the history of the Sassi and its people. It was a tremendous tour and would highly recommend both the tour and the tour guide, Vito
