Sanmachi Suji
Sanmachi Street is a popular sightseeing area in Hida-Takayama. As an old town, the area has houses and stores from the Edo period (1603 - 1868). The area is lined with shops carrying local specialties such as Japanese sake, senbei (rice crackers), barbecue yakiniku Hida beef, and croquettes. The area has a lively atmosphere with people shopping and eating. Sanmachi Street is a five-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. Be sure to stop by when you visit Takayama.
Hida Folk Village (飛騨の里, Hida no Sato) is an open air museum exhibiting over 30 traditional houses from the Hida region, the mountainous district of Gifu Prefecture around Takayama. The houses were built during the Edo Period (1603 - 1867) and were relocated from their original locations to create the museum in 1971. In a village-like atmosphere, the museum features buildings such as the former village head's house, logging huts, storehouses and a number of gassho-zukuri farmhouses. These massive farmhouses are named after their steep thatched roofs which resemble a pair of hands joined in prayer ("gassho"). They were moved here from nearby Shirakawago, where gassho-zukuri houses are the reason for the region's World Heritage status. Admission 700 yen (parking: 300 yen)

From the time our Guide Yuriko (Lily) met us, it was a wonderful, educational experience. She was so accommodating and went out of her way to make our tour so enjoyable. The restaurant she chose for lunch was fantastic and making sure our transportation to a personal request was right on time. We wouldn’t hesitate using Lily again for a tour in Japan. She was Awesome!

Yoshi was a fantastic guide for our trip to see the Autumn festival in Takayama. He came up with an itinerary that allowed us to see all the sights of the festival and catered to the other specific experiences and locations we didn't want to miss! He also took us for a fantastic beef barbecue lunch at a place we'd never have found on our own. He was charming and informative throughout, and we were sorry when our day had to come to an end.

This tour was an excellent option to enjoy the town and learn about its history, culture, crafts and gastronomy. Akane Ito was an excellent guide, very knowledgeable of the town's history and the best places to visit. We visited Takayama for one day.

You really do not need a tour guide for this tour. Our guide, while very nice, simply walked us around the streets near our hotel. There was nothing unique that the guide was able to add to what we could have easily done on our own and at our own pace. There is nothing to see in Takayama beyond a few nice old streets, so having the guide is pretty pointless, and we were done with the tour in about 5 hours.

The tour operator cancelled the tour at 6pm on the night before the tour! Shocking behaviour from Viator.

One of the highlights of our trip to Japan has been our tour of Takayama with Yoko. Yoko’s command of English is excellent. Not only was she flexible in building our customized tour around our interests, but it was a pleasure to discuss topics of interest to us like language and culture, and she has a fun sense of humor. Yoko’s pleasant demeanor greatly enhanced our enjoyment of the Autumn Takayama Festival (高山祭, Takayama Matsuri). We definitely recommend JGA for personalized tours, and in particular we recommend Yoko Tabata.

Lily. Thank you for showing me around Takayama this time. It was also the day of the Takayama Festival, but thanks to the best plan that took the weather into consideration, we were able to see the sights efficiently. Even during the busy lunch hour, we were able to sit smoothly without waiting in line because we had reserved a place for lunch. We were introduced to many places and things that we would have missed if we had only traveled by ourselves. I was able to get to know Takayama from a different angle and had a great time with new surprises and discoveries.
