As per the Viator description we expected a full day safari including English speaking guide. The Guide never got onboard and the driver (Suli) was in a separated compartment making it hard to explain while driving. His guiding was limited to pointing to some animals with a very brief description without really answering questions... (so no real explanations or guidance). However, the early morning Leopard tracking tactics of our driver Suli paid off and we stayed for 10 min in a certain spot after hearing warning signals of monkeys - this yielded a beautiful Leopard sighting on our own (hence the 3 stars). Well done Suli!! We were paired with another guest who took a halfday tour, meaning we had to return all the way back to the entrance around 10am - limiting our safari time. By the time we got back, it was time for lunch. Further, we weren’t clearly informed there is a 2 hour break from 12-2 (at a lovely beach spot), otherwise we would have brought towels to nap or games to play. After lunch he told us that because of the heat, not many animals could be seen. Therefore, we stopped for around 45 minutes in the shade. In the end, we only started the safari again around 15:30; which essentially meant that we did not have the chance to see many animals between 10:00 and 15:30. The driver definitely did his best to find good sightings, however communication was low to non-existent, leaving us often clueless why we suddenly stopped or quickly paced up. Altogether, if you are travelling off-season (not in July-August) there will be lots of opportunities to find better alternatives at lower rates around the Kataragama location (avoid markups at hotels). Finally, good experience but not up to our expectations given other reviews and descriptions - halfday morning would be better.

We were picked up at 4.40 am at our hotel but had to drive for sometime to pick someone else up. When we arrived at the park we had to wait in a queue of jeeps. We finally got into the park at 6.15am. Our driver had very little engagement with us. Occasionally he would tell us us about what we were seeing. We can’t comment on who he was as he never introduced himself. He drove very fast therefore we missed many photo opportunities. On one occasion he drove through some water at speed and appeared to hit something. I hit my face on the seat in front causing my tooth to cut my lip and bleed. Two girls in the front of the Jeep hit their heads on the jeep windscreen. Both of them sustained lumps to their heads. When we told the driver he didn’t apologise he just stated that he had to drive fast (not sure if this was just a language barrier) . We saw lots of animals but did not got to photo them. We also saw a leopard and tried telling the driver to stop but he just drove on. Some jeeps had the window between passengers and the driver open which would have improved communication. Some jeeps also had a driver and co driver to improve seeing the wildlife. We were taken to lunch at 11.10am and was told lunch wasn’t until 12. We had to just hang around until then. We had lunch and was finished by 12.25. We were then told we could not leave until 2pm. We were told that we could go on the beach to pass time. On the beach there is a sign advising not to walk to the left or right of the sign due to wildlife and do not go in the sea. Not sure what he expected us to do on the beach for so long. 2 hours and 50 minutes for a 25 minute lunch is a total waste of time.

We had an absolutely incredible experience at Yala Safari Park! From the moment we entered we started seeing animals, and we were lucky enough to spot a magnificent leopard which was truly a once-in-a-lifetime sight. The highlight of our trip was witnessing a large herd of elephants gracefully roaming the park, creating an unforgettable scene. To top it all off, we unexpectedly encountered a sloth bear, adding a fantastic surprise to our adventure. The diverse wildlife, stunning landscapes, and knowledgeable guides made this trip a perfect escape into nature. We can't recommend Yala enough for anyone seeking an unforgettable safari experience

We booked the whole day so that we would see a lot, and we did indeed 🙂🙂. Our guide/driver Sule went the extra mile to show us everything. So we saw : a herd of 15 elephants, monkeys, bee-eaters, bird of preys, hornbill water buffalo, 3 different leopards, 1 bear..... So I can say, we did see all we wanted and more. The breakfast, lunch and water/orange was included and also the pick-up in our hotel in the neighbourhood. The lunch in-between is 2 hours, so bring something to read 🙂
