Discover Amsterdam on a 2.5-hour walking tour that blends history, culture, and entertainment into an unforgettable experience. Led by a knowledgeable guide, explore the city centre and hear fascinating stories often overlooked by guidebooks. Learn how a small settlement on the Amstel River became Europe’s trading hub during the Dutch Golden Age.
The tour also covers Amsterdam’s more controversial past: the evolution of the Red Light District, liberal drug policies, and the darkest chapters of the 20th century. Each stop offers a unique perspective, helping you understand why this city is unlike any other.
By the end, you’ll gain a deep understanding of Amsterdam—its history, contradictions, tolerant spirit, and vibrant present—and the confidence to explore on your own. This tour is the ideal starting point to make the most of your stay in the Dutch capital.

Claire did a wonderful job, her knowledge of the cities history was excellent, bringing to your attention not just the more well known aspects, but smaller details that added so much. Coupled with her great sense of humour, she added a sense of genuine history, it was one of the best walking tours I have been on.

Guide did not tell us much about Amsterdam, was more like just walking to streets, would not recommend, the other people in our group just ended up talking amongst ourselves as guide was not talking , we met some nice people from around the world

I paid to go with a guide in a small group to tour the Riks. Our guide was absolutely fabulous , so much so that even those who had not paid to have her as a guide, pushed and shoved to hear her narrate the various exhibits. I was repeatedly pushed and shoved out of the way by those who were not in my guided group that i just gave up and stepped way back. Every time our guide said to my small group of 10. , “step forward so i can show you..” a lot of people , not my guided group , surged toward her , pushing and shoving and crowded around her to hear her talk. Why did i pay for a guided tour when so many who did not pay for a guide, pushed me out of the way to hear our guide do an awesome job of talking about each exhibit?

Ilya is a wonderful tour guide with a great sense of humor! His passion for the city and its history and culture was apparent as he brought Amsterdam to life throughout the tour. The two hour walking tour covers history from the 1600s through World War II as well as contemporary life. The tour ended with a relaxing 1 hour canal ride. This is a great tour for exploring the city!
