We had a great tour with Aya. She was so knowledgeable about the Senso-Ji template, and painted a lot of great context around things we would have never otherwise noticed. So glad we decided to do a tour instead of visiting on our own!

It was the hottest day in Tokyo, and the Asakusa area was hosting its annual fireworks festival. I rented a yukata kimono without realizing that it was the day of the festival. The kimono rental shop, Hanaikada Photo Studio, was bustling with customers, but the staff were kind and organized. After getting my yukata, I headed out to Kaminarimon. When visiting Asakusa in Tokyo, one of the first places people want to see is the Kaminarimon, which serves as the entrance to Senso-ji Temple. While commonly referred to as Kaminarimon, its official name is actually Fujin Raijin Gate. The Kaminarimon was originally constructed in the 5th year of the Tenkei era (942) by the military commander Taira no Kinmasa and was later rebuilt at its current location. The statues of the Wind God and the Thunder God, which represent Kaminarimon, are located on either side of the gate. The Wind God, who governs the wind, is positioned on the right side when facing the gate, while the Thunder God, who oversees thunder, is on the left. These gods have long been revered as deities in charge of natural phenomena like wind and thunder. They embody the hope for favorable weather, bringing rain to ensure a bountiful harvest. It was the Asuka period, in the 36th year of Emperor Suiko’s reign (628), on the early morning of March 18, when the brothers Hino-kuma no Hamanari and Takenari were fishing in Edo Bay (Sumida River). Unexpectedly, they discovered a sacred statue of Kannon Bodhisattva. The local administrator, Haji no Nakatomo (names vary in some accounts), venerated the statue, recognized it as the revered Shō Kannon Bosatsu, and devoted himself deeply to it. Later, he became a monk, transformed his residence into a temple, and dedicated his life to worship and offerings. In the first year of the Taika era (645), the monk Shōkai came to this place, established a Kannon hall, and, according to a divine dream, designated the principal deity as a hidden Buddha. Since then, this tradition has been strictly observed to the present day. The giant lantern hanging at Kaminarimon is a well-known symbol of Asakusa. It stands 3.9 meters tall, has a diameter of 3.3 meters, and weighs an impressive 700 kilograms. The frame is constructed from bamboo sourced from the Tanba region of Kyoto, and approximately 300 sheets of Japanese washi paper are used to cover the lantern. This paper is made entirely from kōzo, a plant in the mulberry family, which comes from Fukui Prefecture. Since 1971, Takahashi Lantern Shop, located in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, has been responsible for its production. The lantern is said to be renewed roughly every ten years. Many people walk by the Kaminarimon gate, mostly noticing its iconic lantern. However, beneath this lantern lies an intricate dragon carving created by Takashi Watanabe. This dragon is inspired by a legend that states when the Kannon statue of Senso-ji Temple was discovered, a golden dragon appeared. In Asakusa, dragons are celebrated as sacred beings believed to bring rain and help prevent recurring fires. This reverence is reflected in the dragon carvings that can still be found as part of the deities watching over Sensō-ji Temple. Additionally, it is believed in Japan that dragons residing in the vast ocean possess the power to summon clouds and bring rain. The giant lantern of Kaminarimon is closely associated with the Japanese electronics company Panasonic. This connection began in 1960 when Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (now known as Panasonic), was suffering from joint pain. His health improved after Kyojun Kanjū, the chief priest of Senso-ji at Shimizudani, prayed to the principal deity on his behalf. As a gesture of gratitude, a decision was made to make a donation. During this time, the statues of the Wind God and Thunder God, which are located on either side of the gate, were also restored. This resulted in the current appearance of the Kaminarimon gate. This connection remains relevant today, as the name of Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. (now known as Panasonic), is engraved beneath the large lantern. As you pass through Kaminarimon, you will find two statues on the other side of the gate. The statue on the right, when facing the gate, represents the Golden Dragon in female form, while the one on the left depicts the Heavenly Dragon in male form. Both the Golden Dragon and the Heavenly Dragon are dragon deities that govern water and are regarded as protectors of Buddhists. They are positioned symmetrically opposite the Wind and Thunder Gods mentioned earlier. The dragon deity, named after the temple Kinryūzan Sensō-ji, is represented by two human figures symbolizing a male and a female: the Heavenly Dragon and the Golden Dragon. You can identify these figures as representations of the dragon deity because each one has a tail. Nakamise Street, leading to Senso-ji Temple, is well-known for its approximately 90 shops that sell crafts, souvenirs, sweets, and more. Matcha, Go-Tokyo, Senso-ji, Etc
