Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Guangchang)

Build in 1415, Tian An Men Square is one of the largest squares in the would, with total size of over 40 hectares. It is the main entrance of the Forbidden City, and has an overview of the communist influences on the country.

I am so sad that I have forgotten our tour guide's name, for he was brilliant, loaded with endless information and an obvious passion for his country. He was always looking out for us and helping us. We covered a lot of ground with ample time at each. I imagine places like the Forbidden City would be a nightmare to navigate without help, so I am massively grateful. The Great Wall was life-changing, too. I made friends on this tour that I hope to stay in contact with forever.

We visited the Forbidden City in the morning and the Great Wall in the afternoon, stopping for lunch and quick visits to a jade shop and a tea house. Our tour guide, Michael Shi, spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable about the history of each location we visited. I was especially glad to have a tour guide for the Forbidden City, which is enormous, very crowded and a bit overwhelming. I can't imagine navigating it and enjoying nearly it as much if I'd tried to visit on my own.
