The Cider House tour was one of our favorites during our recent trip to Norway! We were dropped off at the pier and enjoyed a peaceful walk (15-20 minutes) up through the beautiful village of Balestrand to the Cider House. A passionate owner provided a short talk about the orchard and we toured the rooms where cider is actually made. The best part came next: up to the restaurant where the views, cider flight, and lunch were just exceptional! If you’re looking for something different, fun, and yummy, we think you’ll really enjoy this tour!

  • Underwhelming apart from the cider!!

Was really excited to do this tour but ended up pretty underwhelmed. The “bus” was great in terms of having big picture windows to see the views but seats are really crammed in. So if you’re over 5’ 7 you’ll spend a good 7 hours with your knees jammed against the seat in front or sitting skewed around. The scenery is really pretty but it takes a long time - 3 hours or so to get up to the fjord. It’s the exact same route back so don’t worry if you miss anything. The stave church was pretty and the stop is short so that was all good. Thomas the driving was friendly and VERY chatty. In fact I don’t think he stopped for the first 2 hours. Some of his narrative was interesting. A lot wasn’t! We were the only people doing the cider tour and everyone else was going to the glacier. For us, the fjord trip was only around 30 mins and you’re in the really wide part of the fjord so just like sailing on a lake. What was a little disappointing is that we were dropped off at Balusande, asked if we had google maps and had to just get ourselves to the cider house. The cider tour was great - the highlight of the trip and definitely worth going. BUT that concluded at 2pm and we were then stuck in Balasunde until 4.45pm which is when the boat comes back from the glacier. There is absolutely nothing else in town apart from a few hotels and a gift shop. Not even a decent coffee shop. If you want to pay hotel prices I assume you could get a coffee in one of those. Do you just sit and wait for almost three hours. The trip back includes the waterfall which is pretty but you’ve already gone past it once. Overall pretty underwhelmed by the tour. A super long day 7am until 20.40 with not much in it.

The tour was okay but expensive for what it was. There wasn’t a tour of the cidery like advertised, just an hour of tasting and shared appetizers. There was about an hour to spend at Balestrand which wasn’t enough time to find a hike but too much time at a place that really only offered a grocery store and a dock. The boat ride, which was most of the trip, was cancelled due to mechanical/safety issues. Certainly not the wrong decision with safety, but it did cut out a chunk of what this tour was supposed to be. The driver was great and provided information occasionally along the way and really tried to give us a good experience even with the boat cancellation. Overall, this trip felt like long bus transportation for an hour of cider and snacks and back again with brief picture pull overs along the way. I think it would have been more time and cost effective to find public transportation to do the same things.

The tasting was great, but you can do it solo for 1/4 of the cost. The rest was too much sitting. Bus and boat did not provide any great views or fjords

A fun time but a very long day. The ride there is gorgeous and there is a bathroom stop at the waterfall (also a small snack/souvenir shop there). Then we make it to the village with the old church which was super cool to see. The boat ride to Balestrand was about 30 minutes. We were the only ones from this group doing the cider tour and that part (once we got to Balestrand) wasn’t guided but it’s a super small town (~800 people) and they gave us the directions in Google maps and the boats number before leaving. Not sure if it’s usually more guided if more people are doing that instead of the glacier tour but it really was fine without one. The cider tour portion was fun and lunch was pretty good too (it was a cheese roll thing, prosciutto and Mayo, beet hummus, a breaded vegetable ball—almost like a hush puppy, and custard with strawberries). Lunch was after the tour portion which was about an hour long. It was a bit of an uphill walk to the ciderhouse itself. Then we did have a bit too much time in the town since there isn’t a whole lot to do but again, we were a very small tour group so I think the tour and lunch portion went faster than it probably does with more people. You could always bring a book or something while waiting for the boat to pick you back up and there’s plenty of park benches around.

The tour literally starts in front of the entrance to the information center in Bergen city center. The minibus is quality and the seats are very comfortable even for hours of use. After a short break for a coffee you start climbing the steps that guarantee breathtaking views. The visit to the church is very interesting for the architecture and antiquity of the objects contained. Shortly after, we leave by ship across the fjord. At this point, those heading to the distillery get off the ship and proceed independently. The guide takes care of giving all the information you need to get to the distillery and also gives some additional advice on the village of Balestrand. It also gives a contact so that you can always communicate any issues. The distillery can be reached in a few minutes on foot with a simple walk to this fantastic place. His visit is really very interesting. The owner explains the history of his family and cider production by showing the property. You notice the passion and the desire to create a product of the highest quality. Then we proceed with the tasting first solo and then with the lunch dishes. You really notice the care of the choices. Really quality food with a mix of Mediterranean and Norwegian cuisine. Really interesting combinations. The rest of the time can be spent exploring the artists village. Returning to the ship, the glacier tour companions meet up with whom we visit the waterfall on our way back to Bergen. You spend a lot of time on the bus but for those who know Norway know that even nearby places take a long time to reach them. In summary a well organized tour with nothing left to chance. The staff was always friendly and helpful. The only advice is to book the activity directly through the organizer's website as it costs significantly less.

Sunny was a wonderful tour guide and we had the best day on our Cidery tour! We started out with great views in Voss, a tour of one of the most iconic stavekirkes in Vik, and then hopped on the boat over to the Cidery. My husband and I (20s) were able to easily stroll to the Cidery once landing in Balestrand and had no troubles locating it. It was so informative and fun, and a great way to try local ciders and foods that were paired with it! Afterwards, we had plenty of time to explore before catching the boat back and stopping by some waterfalls once we were back on the bus! A full, great day and would highly recommend!

I was very disappointed with Glacier Tours. We had to exit the tour 2 hours into the 11 hour tour due to my spouse becoming sick in the bus. The company has refused to respond to my emails and phone calls requesting a refund or at least acknowledge we exited the tour in order to turn into our travel insurance.
