Ecological Importance: It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biosphere reserve due to its rich biodiversity. Biodiversity: Home to over 300 species of birds (like pelicans, herons, and cormorants). Hosts more than 45 species of freshwater fish. One of the most important wetland ecosystems in Europe. Features: A vast network of lakes, marshes, reed beds, and channels. The region is mostly accessible by boat and has a relatively small human population.

It is the capital of Tulcea County and plays a central role in both the administration and tourism of the delta region. --- Key Facts About Tulcea: Population: Around 70,000 people. Location: Near the point where the Danube splits into its main distributaries—Chilia, Sulina, and Sfântu Gheorghe—before flowing into the Black Sea. ENG: A unique experience, highly recommended, especially during the summer but if the weather allows even in the less indicated months it can give emotions especially because it is not crowded. In fact, despite the cool (we did this hike at the end of November), we still managed to see several birds including the fleeting Martin Fisherman. The boat trip is then crowned with a delicious, authentic and fresh lunch: it is literally the fish that the fishing community has caught, fried carp is illegal by how good. George, our guide was very kind and extremely helpful, told us a lot of anecdotes and stories about each area we met while traveling, was able to answer our particular questions, concerning folklore and mythological themes. We also had a pleasant moment of linguistic comparison between Italian and Romanian. In conclusion, a unique and unforgettable experience that we will certainly try again the next time we pass through Bucharest, perhaps living it in the warmer months with more variety of birds. I recently took a full-day tour from Bucharest to the Danube Delta, and it was a truly unforgettable experience! Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and kept us engaged with fascinating facts about the region’s history and wildlife along the way. Once we arrived, we boarded a small boat for a 4-hour cruise through the heart of the Delta, and it was nothing short of magical. Gliding through narrow canals surrounded by reeds, we spotted a wide variety of birds, including pelicans, herons, and kingfishers. The peace and raw beauty of the wetlands are something you have to experience firsthand – photos don’t do it justice. After the boat ride, we enjoyed a traditional fish lunch at a local guesthouse. The food was delicious – especially the fresh fish soup and fried carp, served with a local plum brandy (“țuică”) to finish. The hosts were warm and welcoming, giving us a true taste of local hospitality. The day ended with a relaxed drive back to Bucharest, and though it was a long day, it was absolutely worth it. If you're looking to escape the city and see one of Europe’s most unique ecosystems, I highly recommend this tour. Just don’t forget your sunscreen, hat, and camera!
