A local guide full of information! We covered a lot of ground, but seeing the nesting albatross was the highlight.

While we took this tour primarily to see the albatross, we were thrilled to learn so much about the history and culture of Dunedin from our excellent guide, Asta. She customized the itinerary to our group's interests and was an excellent problem-solver when necessary.

We had the most wonderful tour experience with our guide Theresa. We were touring on a cruise ship so this tour can easily fit into your day’s schedule. The whole tour was meticulously planned which enabled us to stop at many interesting sites during the day, but never felt rushed at any of the planned stops. At the start of our tour we drove to a high peak just North of Port Chalmers where Theresa showed us (visibly by pointing to places in the distance) the route that our tour would take. After stopping to look at the steepest street in the world (see Guinness book of records), we stopped at her local grocery store to purchase sandwiches etc for our picnic lunch. This was a great idea of our host to factor this into a part of the tour. Whilst in Dunedin, we stopped at the Botanical Gardens, where Theresa walked is through several garden areas explaining the various trees, shrubs and flowers on show. Her immense knowledge of both flora and fauna made this walk very enjoyable. We also stopped to stretch our legs around Dunedin University before we took the scenic highway to the Taiaroa Head peninsula. Theresa kept us entertained with anecdotes about the peninsula and the people who live there. We arrived at the OPERA (Otago Peninsula Eco Restoration Alliance), where we eat our picnic lunch before the group was split into two. One part of the group visited the OPERA to see penguins, while the rest of us drove out to the end of the pinensula to visit the Albatross visitor center. This was the undoubtedly the highlight of our tour which featured a 20 minute talk, a film introduction to the Northern Royal Albatross, then 30 minutes inside an observatory situated high on the cliff above the Northern Royal Albatross nesting ground. Also, one of the male giant seabirds put on a show for us, gliding around the cliff top. Afterwards we met up with the folks who visited the OPERA and took the lake road back to Dunedin / Port Chalmers, stopping briefly in Dunedin to see the historical Railway Station, built in a Flemish Renaissance style using local black basalt rock. As we have already commented, our day tour was very well planned and expertly executed by our tour guide. Theresa was extremely knowledgeable about this part of world, including it’s geography, history and wildlife. If you select this tour and are lucky to have Theresa as your tour guide then you have truly struck gold………
