It was shambolic and I really couldn’t recommend it. Our driver didn’t know where he was going and his internet kept cutting out for his sat nav. A journey of 4 hrs took 6.5. We had 4 breakfasts for 5 guests which consisted of 2 sweet pancakes. In the end I got in the front and directed him with hand gestures as he spoke no English. The trek guide didn’t say a word to us about what we were seeing. Avoid at all costs.

An experience of two parts. The Udawalawe National Park was great. We saw around a dozen elephants, wild boar, deer, mongoose, crocodiles and more. The included breakfast was small but perfect and the safari guide was great. The drive to the national park and then onto Mirissa was unsafe, bordering on scary at times. Pick up was at 5am to allow time for the activities. The driver clearly didn’t get enough sleep the night before and was falling asleep at the wheel. To the point where he was veering off the road, at one point into the dirt on the roadside, and accidentally braking or losing acceleration as he would fall into a microsleep before jolting back awake. We could literally see his eyes closing and reopening in the rear view mirror. At the Safari we encouraged him to have a sleep in the car (the Safari goes for about 3 hours) which he may or may not have done. His condition didn’t improve much and we had a similar experience for the rest of the drive. He also spent his waking time with his phone in one hand texting. Further, through the Ella to Udawalawe section we were travelling at nearly 100km/h around blind turns. It felt like we were in a racecar. We also stopped briefly for ‘coffee’ which turned out to be tea. I’ve travelled to over 30 countries and done many tours, this was the most uncomfortable and unsafe I’ve ever felt in a vehicle.

  • Really nice safari and good experience with an important „however“.

The car was spacious and the driver was friendly and on time. I loved the safari! We had a great guide. Our safari lasted 3.5 hours because we kept on running into some real interesting moments :)) Really worth it for the price in my opinion. I booked through Viator and googled for a coupon, and saved 10% on the tour, so maybe do the same to get a deal. HOWEVER. What I did not like, which is the reason I have 4 instead of 5 stars: beginning shortly after pickup at 5am, the drivers phone rang constantly. Either people were calling him (literally ALL the time, why would so many people want to call you between 5 and 8am?) If he was not on the phone, every minute or more he received messages PING PING PING PING! This made me anxious for 2 reasons: 1. super annoying. I was tired AF, my headphones had no battery left and I was just so annoyed with the beeping and the taking for the entire ride. And 2. reason was obviously our security. They drive like maniacs in Sri Lanka, and having your driver talk on the phone, read and write messages while he is driving other people is just a no-go for me. I understand that this constant communication with their family is their culture, but I had other drivers who managed to keep it to a minimum too. So: if you do book this tour (which I would still do again!), do make sure your head phones are fully loaded.
