We had a great tour with Muhsin today. He met us at the cruise port just as described and very patiently helped us with our entire list of sites to see. He had excellent suggestions for neighborhoods and shops to try. We could not have covered as much ground without him coordinating with the driver and facilitating tickets. But with his help, we made it over to Asia, toured the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and Basilica Cistern, and even went rug shopping. Istanbul is a beautiful city and we enjoyed being able to see so much of it.

Our tour guide (whose name escapes me unfortunately) arrived to pick us up at our hotel on time. We benefited from having a tour guide to help skip the line for 4 major attractions some of which had major lines. He was knowledgeable about all the locations we went to (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace, Basilica Cistern). So what went wrong? In the first 45 minutes of the tour we had covered the two mosques moving primarily at his pace. I am not a crazy photographer but throughout I felt that if I stopped to take a photo on this private 2 person tour (the other person being my spouse who also felt rushed) we were inconveniencing our guide. After the mosques he highly discouraged going to Topkapi Palace (one of the advertised parts of the tour), perhaps another day. Over the course of the next couple of hours I forced us back on track as his itinerary was to bring us to preferred vendors for a sales pitch (we went to a carpet store for a hard pitch for example). When we got to the Palace he told us that he would get us into the courtyard and explain what was to be seen in the various rooms but he would not go in as "they discourage tour guides" so he would have to wait for us. He front loaded his descriptions so he could leave early (this was after 4 hours of an scheduled 8 hour full day tour). By the time we got to this situation I was fine with letting him go as we felt the need to revisit the Blue Mosque for example without being rushed. He summarized his take on being a tour guide at lunch when he said that he goes to the places and says the things. I would contend that there is more involved. Way too expensive and contentious to be worth your time or money.
