A visit to the Senaru Traditional Village, situated next to Rinjani Trek Center where the Rinjani trail begins, is greatly enhanced by asking a local guide to show you around. The Sasak inhabitants are the cultural guardians of Mount Rinjani and its surrounding forest and safeguard its spiritual values. Locally guided visits include opportunities to experience the villagers daily life, visit their thatched houses and gardens of fruits and spices. Very exhausting, but beautiful. Unfortunately no longer an insider tip, therefore far too many tourists who only want your Instagram photo. But Amira and her team put a lot of effort into it and made the day unforgettable for us in a positive sense.

A really nice tour with stunning views of the waterfalls. You also visit a local village made of bamboo and see the first mosque in Lombok before heading to the waterfalls. The hike to the falls is relatively short, and I recommend wearing your swimming gear ahead of time if you plan to take a dip. You can shower under the first waterfall, but it’s not advisable to do so under the second. Be sure to bring water shoes, as you’ll need to cross the river twice. After the hike, you’re treated to lunch, and I must say, it was the best meal we’ve ever had on a tour—lots of food and fantastic flavors. One thing I found odd was that we had a local guide for the hike, but there were also two extra people—one driver and another ‘guide,’ though the latter didn’t join us on the tour. It would seem more efficient, and likely cheaper, to have the driver also act as the guide and then meet the local guide at the destination.

Collected as arranged from our hotel on time. Our guide, Nasri was welcoming and friendly. Approximately a 90 minute journey from Senggigi (with a fast driver!) to our first stop which was the first mosque in Lombok and traditional house. A short onward journey brought us to a small Cafe/ restaurant near the entrance to the park. We then met up with a further guide to take us to the waterfalls. The first one was fairly easily accessible through well made paths and numerous steps. Time was given for us to enjoy the view and be showered by the waterfall. This area had a few shacks where drinks and snacks could be purchased. We sampled the lombok coffee, worth a try. The second waterfall involved a much more strenuous walk. You would require moderate fitness and agility, the guides were great helping. Surfaces are very uneven and you cross the river twice, wear good shoes. The second waterfall was even more spectacular, and rewards the effort you put in to get to it. Again time was allowed to enjoy it, before returning for lunch at the restaurant. This was very tasty and freshly cooked to order. The journey back involved some more fast driving and overtaking, to get us back to the hotel around 4.30. Nasri kindly took many photos and videos during yhe day and transferred them to my phone during the journey back. An unforgettable day, but be aware the terrain isn't always easy, but worth the effort for a memorable experience.
