Tirana
Our tour leader will come and pick you up at your hotel in Tirana. Be prepared for a long but amazing day!
Sveti Stefan
Our first destination for today is Budva in Montenegro, before getting there we will make a stop near Sveti Stefan, historically a fishing town on a small island near the coast. However, nowadays it is not possible to visit the island anymore as it has turned into an exclusive residential resort. Even while standing on the coast, Sveti Stefan is a sight for sore eyes – worth a picture.
Budva
We will drive towards Budva, a popular tourist destination, famous for its beaches, gorgeous nature and old characteristic buildings. The city is separated between an old and new part. On the one hand, in the New Budva, there are many modern buildings, offices, shopping malls, restaurants and bars. On the other hand, in the Old Budva, there is the historical centre and many sights to visit, such as the St. Ivan church, the small church of St. Mary and the medieval splendours of the old town, which we will visit on this tour.
Kotor
Our second destination for today is Kotor, UNESCO world heritage site. The city is a maze of narrow, cobblestone streets crisscrossing the old town. The intention was to confuse intruders who came to plunder the town, while nowadays it characterizes the city. Many of the old buildings and churches have small plaques on it with their dates of construction and original use.
Church of St. Luke
We will visit the Saint Luke’s church which has a great significance for the locals because it represents unity to them.

BREAKFAST
Breakfast
Shkoder
Shkodra city is situated in the north-western part of Albania, giving its name to the biggest lake in the Balkans. It is one of the oldest cities in Albania, with a history of a thousand years of habitation. The oldest wall of the Shkodra castle dates from the 1st millennium B.C. The Roman historian Livy cited the town as the capital of the Illyrian king Gent, who fought the Romans in 168 B.C.
Rozafa Castle
We will visit Rozafa castle offering tremendous scenery of the lake and the three rivers melting all together in the Adriatic Sea.
Shkoder
The city’s architecture is highly influenced by the Venetian style and if you are lucky enough to join the tour of Shkodra in February you might experience the carnival festival. Guests are surprised to learn that most of the Venetian masks are handmade and produced in Shkodra.
Overnight in Prizren.
BREAKFAST
Breakfast
Our first destination for today is one of the best slow food Agro-tourism farms in the Balkans. We will take a tour around the farm. In addition, we will learn about the story of this farm and how it created jobs for more than 400 people in the surrounding area. The farm collects, elaborates and preserves regional bio fresh local products. We will also learn how this family business adapted some old communist buildings to serve as storage for local-made bio products. You will have some free time to enjoy a traditional lunch or buy some fresh produce products from the farm.
Prizren
After this unique experience we will continue our tour towards Prizren, considered as the cultural capital of Kosovo, mixing its rich history, incredible nature, religious tolerance and gastronomic delights.
Prizren
Prizren has played an important role in the region as an Illyrian settlement and a crossroad for the Byzantine and Ottoman empires, contributing to the unique architecture of the city. The river flows through the heart of the old town and under the many bridges that crisscross the city. If you are looking to experience a lively international experience you should visit Prizren during August when the medieval city becomes home to one of the most famous short film festivals in the world named Dokufest. The best way to explore the town is by wandering through the streets passing by elegant medieval houses that fight for your attention. Filigree artisanal techniques for precious metals are Prizren’s joy and pride.
Sinan Pasha Mosque
If you have to choose just one mosque to visit then visit the Sinan Pasha Mosque, rich in arabesque colour and pattern.
The view from the fortress on the hill above the town offers a great panorama of this astonishing town. Free afternoon in Prizren.
Overnight in Ohrid
BREAKFAST
Breakfast
Pristina
Before heading towards N. Macedonia, we will visit the capital of Kosovo, Pristina. We will visit the Newborn monument, symbol of the independence and being a young new country. We will walk towards the main boulevard in the capital. Sheshi Nena Tereza is a nice street to stroll through and enjoy a coffee at one of the bars. Here we will also pass the Skanderberg square with the statue of Skanderberg himself, the national Albanian hero
Skopje
Our tour continues towards Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia. The city has European, Ottoman and even Asian influences. The Stone Bridge connects the new part to the old part of the city. Impossible to miss in Skopje is the Alexander the Great Statue in the center. Another bridge that stands out is the Art Bridge, lined with flamboyant street lanterns and statues of Macedonian artists and musicians. We will wander through the Old Bazaar of Skopje, the biggest one in the Balkans, that combines the modern way of living with centuries of history. The cross on top of the mountain can be seen kilometres away from Skopje and has become a symbol of the city.
BREAKFAST
Breakfast
Ohrid
Today we will continue our city tour of Ohrid, one of the most seductive destinations in N. Macedonia, indicated as one of the oldest human settlements in all of Europe. Ohrid city and Ohrid Lake are part of UNESCO World Heritage since 1980. Ohrid Lake and its surroundings where inhabited by the Illyrian Tribe of Enkeleys. The Lake was named by the Romans as “Lyhnidas” (the Light Lake). Our tour continues to the city of Ohrid (UNESCO world heritage) an important centre of Orthodoxy.
Berat
Later we will drive towards Berat (Albania), known as the town of 1001 windows part of UNESCO world heritage. Walking through the narrowed stone streets offers a fantastic view of the medieval old houses, with windows that seem to stand on top of each other. The city’s life began in the 6th-5th century B.C. as an Illyrian settlement. Later, in the 3rd century B.C., it was turned into a castle city known as Antipatrea. Uniquely today, residents still live inside of the castle walls. Berat has it all; a beautiful medieval castle, ancient churches and mosques, a lively lower town consisting of grand old houses draped on steep hillsides, an old stone bridge, great museums and remains from the communist era in Albania.

Total rip off. We took 8 days tour of Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, and Kosovo for about $2,500 each person. Just for the tour no flights. They put us up in crappy hotels which we found out from booking.com charge around $30/night. For may be even $20/night more they could have booked us in decent hotels. Avoid this company.

Let me start by saying that I am a very generous reviewer ( check my other reviews ). However, in order to be beneficial to other travelers, I find myself having to provide a very critical review of my recent tour. We took the Balkan Jewels tour : Montenegro, Albanian, Kosovo & N Macedonia. It sounds like a great tour but it is not really a tour but more of a marathon driving event. Our tour group consisted of 7 travelers. We were transported by a van which had a broken air conditioner. The air conditioner only worked from the front middle and driver side vent so anyone sitting in the back was very hot. The tour company did try to compensate by buying the group dinner. They did not consider replacing the vehicle. In most tours I have experienced, there is a driver and a tour guide. Choose Balkan only has a driver who is also the tour guide. Since driving is somewhat difficult in the Balkans, the “tour guide” doesn’t interact very much while driving with the entire group because they are focused on driving and only the people in the front seat can hear the guide. When we finally reached our destination, the tour guide gave us a brief 10 minute overview of the city. They drop you off and then you have an hour or two to eat something and walk around. In many cities, the guide did not walk with us since they must try to park and watch our baggage in the van. There were many sites on the “will be visited” list that we did not see since we did not know where they were located and had to wander by ourselves. Examples of sites we did not see include “ St. Ivan church in Budva, Small church of St. Mary in Budva, Saint Luke’s church in Kotor, Catholic Cathedral in Shkodra, etc. The tour guide did walk around with us in Berat and Skopje. The guide was nice enough and tried very hard to provide information but given the work conditions, the tour was not what I expected. I consider the tour very expensive for what we received. These tours may seem like they will provide a nice overview of the different countries, but in actuality, you spend the majority of your time driving. The first day we drove for over 10 hours and spent 3 hours walking in two cities. Had I known the driving to walking ratio,I would not have booked this tour. I did map out the route in Google maps but the reality did not match the actual driving time. Given the traffic in the Balkans, every day was spent with the majority of time in the car. We have traveled extensively and I do try to use local guides and tour companies. However, I cannot recommend this tour given our poor experience.

Thanks for the wonderful traditional dinner we enjoyed in Prizren with our guide Ana, as she entertained us with stories of her family’s life and traditions. It helped make up for the 17 hr day the day before.

Overall, this was a brilliant and educational adventure through the Balkans. If you want to just get a brief understanding of each country, it's history, culture and landscape then I can highly recommend this tour. I learnt so much about Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia in the days that we were there. Our tour guide Juli/Julian was great and so friendly, asking any questions we had along the way. I have to say though that I felt sorry for him given just how much driving was involved. The day's were really long often with early starts so it wasn't so much a holiday but instead an 'adventure'. Myself and fellow travellers (we were a small group of 4) agreed that the itinerary was too intense at times and wished that it was spread over a longer period. Often we'd reach a location and before we knew it we were back in the van again. For example we wished we had longer in Lake Ohrid - a chance recuperate from all the walking and trekking around castles, and instead missed out Berat at the end as by that point we (and our driver/guide) were exhausted, plus it made no sense given he had to drive all the way down there to come back up again to Tirana (the end destination). For this reason, my friend and I added 2.5 days on at the end in Tirana which was much needed! I would say is these tweaks were made to this tour it would have been 5/5. The accommodation was mixed - fantastic hotel in Shkodër, not so much in Prizren and Ohrid. Despite this, I found the team at Choose Balkans (shout out to Sirma!) to always be helpful, polite, reliable and very prompt at getting back to any query I had. Still, an enlightening excursion!

Amazing trip from start to finish! Sirma was extremely responsive during the planning process, checked in several times during the trip, and followed up after the excursion. My guide Artin was the best. He was extremely knowledgeable, courteous, and funny. Thank you for everything! I left my heart in Albania!
