Yanaka District
Discover the different side of the sprawling Japanese capital that dates back to its Edo period of the 17th through 19th centuries, admiring the area’s charming mix of temples, springtime cherry blossoms and timeless ‘reien’ (cemetery). A included guide will accompany you on your visit, providing additional details about Japanese history and local culture.
Tennoji Temple
This Buddhist Temple sits on the edge of the Yanaka Cemetery and dates back to 1274. It is located in a pleasant garden behind an old wooden gate. In its grounds, there is a bronze Buddhist statue that dates back to 1690 and was beloved by locals as "Tennoji no Daibutsu". Well worth to stop by.

What a rare find! We wanted an experience away from the bustle of Tokyo, and this Yanaka Walking Tour turned into one of our favorite days in Japan. Our guide, Kaori, was an absolute delight — warm, thoughtful, and incredibly knowledgeable in such an effortless, unassuming way. She led us through quiet backstreets, historic shrines, and an old cemetery rich with stories of loyalty and honor. We peeked into charming family-run shops and saw parts of the city we never would have discovered on our own or with a large group. One of the most memorable moments was meeting a 100-year-old candy maker in his tiny shop and watching rice cakes being prepared in an oven on the ground in a small family storefront. They were delicious. It felt like stepping back in time — intimate, real, and very special. Kaori continually went above and beyond. She adjusted the start time to fit our schedule and made us feel like the entire day was curated just for us. She carried a tote bag filled with notes, visuals, and even cooling cloths and salt tablets to help us handle the heat. She took photos of us throughout the day and followed up afterward with a beautifully assembled photo album — such a thoughtful touch. This wasn’t just a tour. It felt like spending the day with a dear friend who genuinely wanted us to fall in love with her city. Yanaka became a treasure — because Kaori was a treasure. Debbie Staszak

This walking tour was a nice look at the older part of Tokyo that has survived as original through many disasters in the area. This has resulted in it being like an open air museum. Kiyo was a wonderful guide. She gave us a lot of background and history that was so helpful. And her binder with illustrations and tables really made things easy to understand. We saw interesting places including shrines, cemeteries, original merchant houses, shopping streets and more. It was a great way to spend a morning. And we appreciated her following up with the pictures she took during the tour.

Kenさん was really friendly, knowledgeable and very nice to walk with. His English was extremely good too and made conversation easy. We walked around some local areas telling us history and bits of good information. We walked through shops, had lunch, and coffee together. Highly recommend for a lovely, relaxed walk with good company. You feel like a local with him. Thank you Kenさん!

A friendly and informative tour around the neighbourhood of Yanaka. We were surprised that there were so many shrines and lovely green spaces to visit. It was a very pleasant walk and we stopped at a cafe which served excellent tea on the way. The conversation with our guide Charlotte ranged from history to culture to religion to cuisine to the basics of writing Japanese! A wonderful afternoon.

Fun walking tour through a part of town we otherwise wouldn’t have come to. Was a nice and quiet step away from the main stretch of Tokyo, but still in the hear of the city

Katsu-san (aka Goreilo) met us at our hotel on our first full day and gave us an introduction to the Yanaka Ginza area that we would be touring before heading out. While strolling, we bombarded Goreilo with questions about the country’s religions, beliefs and customs. He fielded all of them quite thoroughly. What I liked about this tour was that the temples he took us to were neighborhood ones so there were no large crowds to contend with. We were able to walk the neighborhood and spend time in a cemetery which was very different than ours in the US. Goreilo also took us to a bakery to try some local treats and to a local shopping district. We also went to a gorgeous museum called Asakura Museum of Sculpture (Asakura Choso Museum). He did a great job explaining the subway system and helped us with the navigation to our next adventure. Goreilo is a lovely man and is very knowledgeable about his country.

Great introduction to Old Tokyo. Our guide was wonderful! Taught us some customs and courtesies as we toured. Even in the rain it was a memorable experience!

All and all a good tour. A little long on the front end with time spent in the cemetery. But the rest of the tour was a great introduction to the city and the culture on our first day in country. Charlotte, our guide was great. She looked out for our safety, answered all questions, and provided a nice historical background to what we were seeing.

Loved our private tour of the Yanaka area. Ken was a great tour guide, friendly and knowledgeable, giving us a glimpse into an area of Tokyo we wouldn’t likely have seen otherwise. Our experience was seamless from beginning to end. Highly recommend

Kieta was our excellent guide for the afternoon. As it happened we were the only people on the tour. We chose the Yanaka tour because it offered a glimpse into Japan and its religious temples and shrines without the crowds. It also gave an insight into everyday life. We very much enjoyed the experience. (p.s. finding the north gate at Nippori station was a bit of a challenge for newbies so maybe add a little bit extra time)
