Kintsugi is a simple restoration technique that uses gold or other metal powder to repair broken, chipped, or cracked pieces. Kintsugi has been handed down in Japan from ancient times, and the culture of taking good care of things has attracted attention worldwide.
Kintsugi lacquer comes from the poison oak tree or black tree of the poison ivy family. When dried, lacquer is a natural adhesive that is harmless to the human body and has a hardening effect.
Cracks are considered a landscape in kintsugi, and the joint is decorated with gold, silver, or other metal powder. Kintsugi is based on not pretending that the cracks have never existed but considering them part of the item's history and breathing new life into it.
In 2024, Master Taku is awarded with the Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon, the honorable commendation given to individuals who have made significant achievements in the fields of science, art, invention, improvement, and creation this year.

As someone passionate about art and a studio art minor, I was looking forward to this experience the most during my entire trip to Japan and was unfortunately let down. The instructor/artist clearly was very good at his craft however not great at explaining things well. I asked questions for understanding and assistance multiple times during the session and was ignored most of the time. I was 1 of 4 people in the class so it had nothing to do with amount of others in the class. Not sure if the instructor was upset or what was going on but it seemed odd. I really was hoping for a deeper understanding of the method and background of the art.

Master Taku was AMAZING. This kintsugi workshop became one of the most meaningful experiences of our entire trip to Tokyo. My daughter and I loved every part of it. We learned the history and philosophy behind the art, and then restored our own pieces using pure gold lacquer with his patient and thoughtful guidance. The class was small, so we received plenty of personal attention. The whole experience felt calm, creative, and very welcoming. It was the perfect break from sightseeing and it gave us a chance to slow down and focus on something beautiful. We enjoyed it so much that we talked about returning the next day, and now we want to order supplies so we can continue practicing at home. If you want an authentic hands-on activity that feels special and memorable, this workshop is truly a must-do in Tokyo.

A very beautiful and uplifting experience with Taku Nakano at his studio! We enjoyed each and every moment learning the Kintsugi Pottery art ! Learned about wabi -sabi and the takeaway from the workshop was that , no matter what trials come your way , like the kintsugi , you emerge more stronger and beautiful!

Such a fantastic class. I did it with my 5 year old who loved it, and the teacher was so hands on helping him so that we could both make our own pottery. Master Taku was there as well and was so kind to my child and marveled at his work at the end. We absolutely loved this class! Bring protective eyewear as they don't provide it and you use a file to sand/shave the pottery and the particulates can get in your eye.
