Calligraphy is not only an art form and a symbol of Japanese culture, but also a form of meditation.

Guided by a professional calligraphy instructor, you’ll use handmade brushes from Kumano, Hiroshima — Japan’s top brush-making town — and enjoy a calm, creative moment to express yourself.

Write your own calligraphy on a paper fan and take home a unique souvenir.

The workshop is held at “Takumi,” a 50-year-old folk craft shop.

One wall is beautifully decorated with ukiyo-e prints, creating an artistic atmosphere.

“Takumi” is also known as Hiroshima’s leading craft shop, offering traditional items from across Japan.

It was really nice. You Train the simple techniques first and then you can choose your own Kanji. After that you can take it home. :)

Teacher was very clear, supportive and encouraging. He took us through all the different tools we would be using and their names in Japanese. Then he guided us through the basic stroke types before giving us the opportunity to complete our design on a paper fan that we got to keep. Amazing learning experience and absolutely would recommend.

It was fun to be able to experience calligraphy for the first time in a while and to interact with people from overseas. I was struggling with calligraphy when I was a child, but as I was writing as an adult, my memories of it came back to me and I felt fresh. It was a unique experience only available at Hotel Blank. Good memories are treasure
