The photogenic incense sticks
From early morning everyday, the incense sticks are shredded from bamboos. Then the dyeing process takes place, when a layer of red color is applied onto almost a half of the stick. The sticks are then dried out in the sun, in bundles. These bundles are arranged to look like small umbrellas in order to get as much light as possible. The sticks create a layer of deep red color on the photos. And any subject at the font, such as a worker, would stand out really well and eye-catching.
Later in the day, the sticks are collected, tied in bigger bundles before loading onto small trucks and travel to other places.

Hanoi
Our Vietnam photography tour destination today is a village located 1.5 hour driving from Hanoi. This is where the locals have long involved in making incense sticks. Then, the sticks travel to all over Vietnam to find themselves burning on family alters or in temples. Photographs of these sticks have been published on some famed channels, including CNN. And some others gained awards from Smithsonian photo contests.

I booked this tour at the end of our trip to Asia and was super satisfied. The hotel pick-up is of course very early at 05.15 in the morning - but you gain impressions beyond the tourist crowds. We had breakfast on site in a restaurant - the soup with the crab meat was delicious (and the coffee prepared by my guide Mike was also delicious). My guide was extremely friendly and helped me a lot with the settings and compositions. He was also able to report interesting details from Vietnamese culture between North, South and Central Vietnam. Because he knows the villagers and talks to them, very different encounters also come about. Especially the encounter with a war veteran I found very impressive. A great experience that I highly recommend. Next time I would book the other villages as part of a day tour as well. This time I had to go to the airport in the afternoon.

I had an amazing experience on the photography tour in the incense village, and a huge part of that was thanks Son Trieu, who was exceptional as our guide. From the very beginning, he was warm, knowledgeable, and incredibly attentive. He knew exactly where to take us for the best light, colors, and compositions, and he timed everything perfectly so we could capture various phases of incense-making process at their most beautiful moments. Son didn’t just point out photo spots—he explained the traditions behind the village, introduced us respectfully to several local artisans and families, and made sure we were photographing in a way that felt authentic and ethical. His tips on angles, framing, and storytelling genuinely helped me improve my shots, and I came away with some of my favorite photos from my entire Vietnam trip. The tour was well-organized, relaxed, and inspiring, and I never felt rushed. If you’re a photographer, whether beginner or experienced, I highly recommend the tour and Son as a guide. A five-star experience from start to finish!

This was my first photo trip and it exceeded my expectations. Son takes great care in planning his excursions..they are authentic and you are totally immersed in the culture. Many times we were the only tourists in the areas we visited. Son’s attention to detail is impeccable. He knows the history of Vietnam and cares deeply about the photo set up. Any trip with Son is not to be missed.

We had an amazing experience at the Incense Village! Everything was so well organized and planned for Momentlives. Our guide, James, was super friendly, attentive, and made the whole visit even more enjoyable. We went at a perfect time with no other tourists around – it felt like we had the place all to ourselves. We came back with many beautiful photos and great memories. Truly a 10/10 experience!

I had a truly wonderful time on the photography tour . Visiting the incense village was an unforgettable experience—not just for the beautiful scenes to photograph, but also for the chance to learn about the local people and their craft. Jeames guidance and insights made it all the more special. At the moment, I can’t think of anything that could have made it better—it was very well organized and enjoyable from start to finish. Thank you again for your hospitality and for making my time in Hanoi so memorable.

Just about 35km southwest of Hanoi’s center, Quang Phu Cau Incense Village (located in Ung Hoa district) offers a uniquely rich cultural experience. You should be allowed to give more than 5 stars! What an absolute amazing experience we had in the lead up and on tour with Momentlives. Son was very welcoming to our requests and organised a private tour for my wife and I and customised it so we could get the absolute most out of a full day. Amazing images aside, the way the tours are run and the experiences and knowledge you receive are nothing short of spectacular. James was our guide and was amazing, you can tell by the way he interacts with the locals, their faces lighting up and smiling in his presence…it was really wonderful to see and experience. And an extra shout out to James for helping my wife out with her phone photography, having someone who has shot these scenes before in certain light he was able to suggest different angles and ideas with her images. We came away from the end of day with not only a heap of amazing images but one of the best travel experiences in general we’ve had to date. Thank you Son and the teat of the team…already looking forward to doing it again in the future!!
