The historic Plaka district might be one of Athens’ most popular tourist destinations, but there’s another part of the area that vsitors rarely see, one where the city’s ancient heart beats a little louder.

Under the shadow of the Acropolis, this is the place that saw the birth of classical Greek and Western civilization and also the turbulent arrival of Christianity. There are traces here of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans, found in the ruins, churches, local houses, and – most importantly – in the food.

Very educational ! As a Chef I was able to ask detailed questions that were understood and I gained additional information. I am not saying that it was over the hill but appropriate to the audience. The tour was excellent and well worth the cost of the trip. I would definitely suggest this trip, it is more than entertainment.
Superb, found hidden gems, food and narrative were simply OUTSTANDING

Katia was fabulous! She was very knowledgeable about the Athens neighborhood we toured. My wife & I really appreciated the locally owned & operated restaurants/cafes we visited. And…the food & coffee were delicious! We also enjoyed sharing stories with her. We would definitely recommend her.

Katia was an excellent guide. Her knowledge and enthusiam about Athens and Greek Food was outstanding. The places that we visited were exactly what we were looking for--small family multi-generational establishments. We have been on many food tours and we highly recommend this tour.

Wow! This tour lived up to our expectations and more! Do it early and you will know where to eat for the rest of your trip. Katia gave us such a warm introduction to her home city of Athens, and not just the food (though there was lots of that, all superb) but the way of life, the history, and the culture. Food included creamy yogurt drizzled with honey, piping hot souvlaki, flaky cheese pie, candied clementine, a flight of olive oils and more and more. We also bought souvenirs at some of the shops and got plenty of tips about other places to go for the rest of our stay. Can't recommend this tour or Katia enough! We left feeling we had gained not only a richer understanding of Athens, but a friend as well.

Since we were 6, it turned out to be our private tour. Meet-up was easy and visits within Plaka were unexpected and varied. Just great to be led by a local to visit places you would never do on your own. Each business was happy to see us and were ready to entertain.

We had such a wonderful experience on our food tour with Katia! She was so kind, knowledgeable, and introduced us to so many wonderful food experiences in Plaka. She knew a lot about the history of Athens and also showed us parts of the city we wouldn’t have been able to find on. Our own. My 10 year old son also participated in the food tour, and she went out of her way to make him feel included. I highly recommend this food tour (and Katia in particular). It was one of our favorite experiences in Athens!

We loved the entire experience! The food was amazing, and Katia shared her personal cherished stories of eating many of these places in her childhood, which made us feel extra special too. We enjoyed learning about the culture and history of the area as we strolled. Katia was very thoughtful, ensuring that we savored all of the flavors and aromas, as well as teaching about some of the techniques to prepare the food. The portions were large, and we felt the value was incredible!

Culinary Backstreets are among my favorite tours during my travels. They are a great way to spend a few hours walking through a part of the city and sampling local foods and beverages and getting while also getting some cultural history of the area as well. I especially appreciate how the places you visit are not just for tourists, but also places locals frequent as well. Overall, highly recommended, a must-do if visiting a city in which it is offered.

Constantine was great. We went to a range of different restaurants, bakeries, cafes, etc. and tasted many different authentic foods. Constantine made sure we had a great experience. He spent a lot of time with us and was very clear and informative.
