Kim Ngan Temple
The Kim Ngân communal house is located on Hang Bac street in Hanoi's old quarter. It is one of three structures built for social gatherings and worship of a legendary figure revered as the inventor of all trades. During the Indochina conflict, the structure was used as a training center for nurses and troops, as well as a lecture hall for teaching Vietnamese Romanized script. From 1954 through 2009, a number of families lived there, but by 2009, the remaining 25 households had been relocated in an effort to restore the structure to a close approximation of its original design. The repair work was carried out by Hoan Kiem District specialists with technical support from Toulouse, France.

Excellent tour of Hanoi old town

5.00Jeanie was an excellent guide. She brought us to sites across old town and shared interesting facts about everything she showed us. She brought us to a hidden gem of a coffee shop with beautiful views of the lake. She was kind, courteous and answered all our questions about Vietnam. Would highly recommend taking one of her walking tours!

5.00Visited museums, walked along the lake tried local ice cream and had lots of questions answered about the culture In Vietnam. We also caught some musical performances near the lake. Mihn pointed out a lot of things along the way including places to eat and the opera house which we were interested in viewing.

5.00Mihn met us in the early afternoon and we had a beautiful sunny clear day. A highlight for me was when he stopped by a small museum and they were having an exhibit on paper making. We decided to come back after the tour because it was such a nice day and we wanted to be outside. I would never have noticed it if Mihn hadn't pointed it out. In fact they were just about to close down for dinner but Mihn interceded and we were able to go in and have a delightful time shopping and talking with the artists inside. He was also helpful in answering our questions and pointing out some of the artisans streets and craft areas around Hanoi. Very pleasant company.

5.00Had a wonderful tour with Arthur!! He was wonderful and super knowledgeable. We also got to walk through the house where the declaration was written. He was very flexible especially when we wanted to make a quick shopping stop. Would highly recommend this tour, can’t go wrong!

5.00My husband and I love walking tours. Even when we’ve done our own research beforehand, nothing compares to learning directly from locals who live and breathe the city. We always come away with new insights, and Hanoi was no exception. We joined two half-day tours with Hanoi Free Walking Tours on different days: Hanoi Old Quarter & French Quarter with Jaenie (Đông Thuỵ), and Ho Chi Minh Complex & Temple of Literature with Camille (Phương Anh). Both young women were warm, knowledgeable, and communicated very well. We also appreciated that it ended up being just the two of us on each tour. That said, the streets of Hanoi can be incredibly congested, and at times we found ourselves walking almost single file. It made me realize that it would have been very difficult to hear the guide clearly in a larger group. Perhaps the organization could consider using whisper headsets in the future, especially for busier routes. Lastly, although neither tour was a food tour, both Jaenie and Camille introduced us to wonderful local cafés and restaurants we might not have discovered on our own. These stops ended up being highlights of our visits and added a personal, memorable touch to each tour. Overall, we enjoyed our time and deeply appreciated the dedication of our guides.

5.00Thank you Arthur for such a joyful and insightful morning touring The Old Town. We learnt so much interesting history and also about recent events. Your knowledge and passion was much appreciated, especially the Ho Chi Minh story. Adapting to our interests was great and those hidden food stops and cafes were a delight.

5.00Wonderful and insightful tour with Pepper, a young and very intelligent college student. Pepper made our tour all the more special with his descriptions of his upbringing and Hanoi culture. And, who knew, he can do a Rubik cube in 5 seconds!
