The Jewish Community of Athens has two functioning synagogues, both on the same street facing each other, in the area of Thission, near the city center. The older of the two is the Romaniote one, built-in 1904, at 8, Melidoni Steet. It is called Etz Hayyim, a common name for Romaniote synagogues. Still called “the Ioannina Synagogue” by the community’s older members, it is the smaller of the two and is used today only during the High Holidays. The ground floor houses the community’s offices, in rooms originally intended for a Jewish school. Right across the street, at number 5, is the newer and larger, Beth Shalom Sephardic synagogue, built-in 1935 of white Pentelic marble and the architecture is an austere Greek Revival style, renovated in 1975, and the one fully used today. Its exterior is in white marble with neoclassical elements, while the spacious interior bears not much resemblance to the Greek tradition regarding synagogue design.

The tour guide(s) were excellent. I would recommend their service. Command of English was very good and they spoke very clearly. The tour was over two days because of the Jewish holiday, but they handled that issue very well.

Very nice overview of the city and the jewish sites. The acropolis elevator was broken but the replacement acropolis museum was excellent

We asked for a Jewish tour and were taken to the Jewish museum and dropped off to fend for ourselves. We thought we were to see the synagogue, but were told they were also closed. We were dropped off to walk by them and the holocaust memorial. Very disappointing would not recommend.

We enjoyed very much the tour. Our driver Peter Carabellas was very helpful because he took us everywhere and explained many facts about Athenas. However, the car that you sent us was very small for 4 adults and the driver. We were very tight and we hardly fit in it. That made our tour a little uncomfortable. But at the end we learned a lot of that city. We had a great time thanks to Peter.

The knowledge and kind manner of George was bar none! No question was too big or too small. We learned SO MUCH! He has a congenial personality as well so if you have children or not as “focused” tourists, he would be perfect. He is patient, and relaxed and without any airs about him. Two thumbs up!

The tour guide was great and we took our time at all of the sites. We even went to a Bar Mitzvah at the synagogue. The tour The tour included other non-Jewish sites since the Jewish sites do not fill the day. This is a great way to combine a Jewish tour with a regular tour.
George is a wonderful tour guide!

We really enjoyed our day touring with George! He gave very insightful details and was extremely accommodating, always wanting to make sure we were happy. We actually did the 8 hour tour, but there was no option for reviewing this on Trip Advisor, so the 6 hour tour was the closest. The Jewish part is only the first hour or so, but the Jewish museum is very interesting with lots of details about Jewish life, especially the Jews of Thessaloniki. Athens tours Greece were great, and George was an especially good tour guide!
