Amazing experience! Obed was our tour guide who picked us up on time from our hotel. The first part of the tour was given by the Masai chief a the second part Obed and the Masai jointly gave us an overview from the bush. Very informative and a great way to spend part of the day. Highly recommend!!

The experience with the Massai was amazing! They are so welcoming and open to sharing their traditions and customs. Tim and Obed were fantastic guides and really shined with their professionalism and knowledge of the Massai and surrounding areas. I will definitely repeat the tour if I return!

We were picked up by Obed from our hotel, he is friendly and well informed. We took the drive to our destination and Wow, we experienced quite a lot in the couple of hours that we spent with the Masai community. From dressing up in their traditional gear and spending the day in their bright attire. Showing us how to make fire, how the wives build their homes and so much more..you will have to go to experience it, I can't describe the joy I felt in the time we spent there.

I thought this tour was going to be a visit to the Maasai Mara to experience the landscape and learn about the culture, but it was so much more. Firstly, had I researched I would have known the drive to Maasai Mara is 6 hours from Nairobi rather than the 2.5 hour drive spelled out in the tour description. Instead, this excursion was a visit to a Maasai family who generously opened their home and lives to us for a day. Our tour guide Tim was punctual and full of insights about the country and cultures that make up Kenya as we made the drive. When we arrived, the family greeted us so warmly, dressing us in their clothing and adorning us in their jewelry and weaponry. From there, Tim took us into the adjoining grassland to explain how the different species of acacia help form an ecosystem that enables the people and animals to peacefully coexist. The thorny plants are used to form fences hyena can’t jump over to attack their livestock while one tree releases pheromones that ultimately discourage certain wildlife from grazing and yet another tree is used to make chewing sticks for natural teeth cleaning. One of our male hosts demonstrated the initiation practice of throwing a spear. Afterward, we were welcomed into their home, which we learned is not only the domain of the woman, but built by the women, too! I was very impressed. One of the women of the house showed us how they tend to the fire (it’s the males’ duty to start the fire and the females’ to keep it going) and how they sterilize the gourds they keep the milk they obtain from their livestock. Additionally, we learned about the family structure—how the grandparents are the primary caretakers of the children while the parents work (the women milking the animals, etc while the men herd the livestock, buy and sell at the market on market days, and otherwise protect the boma (homestead). At the end of our visit, one of our female hosts made and gifted us each a bead ring before leading us together with the men in a short dance and singing performance. We learned that 50% of the tour fee goes to the community. We were notified at the beginning of the tour that tipping was not included, but most give around $20 USD or its equivalent. I honestly thought that was a lot, but by the end of the experience, I thought a tip was more than appropriate. This tour combines the hospitality of a home visit with the education of a textbook. As I was reflecting on it, I thought it would make an excellent part of curricula for primary and secondary school students in Kenya and Tanzania where the Maasai are located.

It was a generally great experience. Tim our tour guide and driver was very warm and hospitable. He made the 2 hour trip feel so relaxing and gave us a crash course on what life and living in Kenya is like. We discussed topics ranging from Kenyan politics and economy, to the culture and climate in East Africa generally and also managed to exchange details about what life is like where I’m from. The whole car ride felt like a cultural exchange. The Masai village tour itself felt authentic. We got a glimpse of what the bomas and manyattas look like and it was interesting to experience first hand what life as a member of the Masai tribe looks like. We met the village chief Alfred who gave us insights into the history and customs of the Masai people and how the traditions have evolved over time. I did feel like parts of the tour felt a bit intrusive but it looked like the Masai people were happy to have us. Overall, I would recommend for someone who is interested in exploring local cultures in Kenya.

It was an amazing experience. We learnt a lot about the Masai community.and their way of life. The time allocation was perfect, we had sufficient time with the family, had lunch along the way and the drive was pleasant. I would not chnage anything. The your guide was smart young man who is knowledgeable about Kenya and the tourists attractions. He took time to show us the areas along the way shared stories about important Kenyan events and important landscapes. The overall moods was great, the family was receptive, welcoming and shared their time and space with us.

Mwose N. was on time with the hotel pick up and was really informative on what to expect in terms of distance. He allowed us to take pictures along the way. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of learning about the Masai culture and people. I recommend people put on sunblock though. The time length is accurate along with the one lunch break.
