Meteora
Breathtakingly surreal and serenely spiritual, the Metéora monasteries spring forth from a dreamy landscape of rocky megaliths in the plains of the Thessaly Valley. The first hermits came to this far-removed corner of Greece at least as early as the 11th century to withdraw from the world and contemplate divinity. Christian Orthodox monks began building monasteries here in the 14th century. Originally 24 monasteries stood at this astonishing location, built onto the edges of vertiginous cliffs or perched on sheer sandstone formations as high as 300 meters. With their exalted heights and almost mystical inaccessibility, the Metéora monasteries seem to soar towards heaven and reflect the human striving for holiness. Please be modestly dressed. Women are suggested to wear long skirts & long sleeves. If you do not have, you will be given a skirt in your way in.

My husband and I had an amazing trip to Meteora. In fact, it was one of our favorite tours during our 3-week stay in Greece. We initially debated between booking a group vs. private tour, and we are so glad we opted for the latter. Making a reservation on the Crispy Local website was easy. I was contacted via WhatsApp the day before to confirm our pick-up details. Our driver, Anthony, arrived on time, and he was professional, friendly, and informative. On the way to Meteora, we stopped by Thermopylae and took some pictures of the monument. Then we visited 3 of the monasteries and spent about an hour at each one. Anthony was flexible and accommodating the entire time. After our tour of the monasteries, we had a delicious lunch at a local taverna and headed back to Athens. The drive back to the city was long but comfortable, and Anthony was an excellent driver. Not to mention, he contacted the authorities to inform them of a dog that was running loose on the highway. As an animal lover, I really appreciated his action. Meteroa is a magical place and definitely worth the visit. If you can splurge for a private tour, I highly recommend it. Based on what I've read in other reviews, most group tours tend to return to the Athens bus station around 10:30 pm. However, my husband and I were back at our hotel before 7:30 pm. We appreciated not having to wait around and riding in the comfort of a private vehicle. Overall, we had a wonderful trip.

Dimitri was a great driver, very friendly and accommodating to our needs and timing wishes. Was a great trip and would recommend a private tour for this area.

Our driver was Harry and he was a very pleasant driver. He made a side stop to see a hot spring on the way to the monasteries. He wanted to take us to the Great Meteoron but it was closed on Tuesday. The views were stunning with the rock formations. We hired a tour guide for two monasteries and it was good information. We had a good lunch outdoor and it was relaxing. The car was a sedan and the ride was good.

Our private tour excursion to Meteora was a highlight of our trip. Although it was a long day trip from Athens, we were all happy to have chosen this option. George, our very capable driver and guide, picked us up promptly at our hotel at the scheduled time. The vehicle was a very comfortable Mercedes van. George was engaging, and informative during the trip to and from Meteora, sharing his historical and cultural knowledge. He was attentive to us and made appropriate stops en route. The drive to Meteora was beautiful, and it was a welcome diversion from the busyness of Athens. George was a very pleasant and enjoyable companion with over 20 years experience with this particular tour. Meteora itself is breathtaking. It is inconceivable how the monasteries and convents were built into the otherworldly landscape. The area was rife with tourists, even at the shoulder season, but George, being so familiar with the area, navigated us well, and maximized the time we had. We were able to visit each site on our own time which was so relaxed as opposed to a scheduled large group tour. After our tour was complete we enjoyed a delicious meal at a local restaurant. It was one of the best meals we had in Greece. It was an unforgettable day, and well worth the expense and time. Highly recommended and not to be missed.

My friend’s and my trip to from Athens to Meteora was wonderful thanks to Giorgos of Crispy Local. He was so warm and personable, prompt picking us up (in a Mercedes) and was always around quickly to pick up us at every Monastary (a commendable feat). He also took the time to figure out what kind of restaurant we would like in Kalambaka (Greek Gardenia restaurant was perfect for us) and even recommended a small gem museum in town which we liked. We appreciated that he “read” our personalities and offered appropriate suggestions. We didn’t want to be on a typical bus tour with a set schedule; Georgios gave us the customized and comfortable outing that we were hoping for. While much more expensive, we felt it was well worth it and highly recommend Crispy Local for any of your private tour needs.

We had a wonderful experience today! George was a fantastic driver and conversationalist. He made the very long day go by quickly. Of course, Meteora is awe-inspiring and Georgina was so knowledgeable. The restaurant George chose for us was lovely and the food was an exceptional local taverna where we left stuffed and quite happy! We will never forget this day!

We were collected on time from our hotel by Anthony. The trip to Meteora is 4 hours but there is plenty of changing scenery along the way. Despite the weather being inclement Anthony took us to see as much as was possible. The visit through the monastery was both incredibly beautiful and educational as boards throughout the areas open to the public contained information that gave life to the many paintings on the walls and ceilings. I would definitely recommend this trip for anyone who appreciates individual attention.

I booked this experience mostly for my parents, as they were really excited to see the monasteries, but my mom has some mobility difficulties. This private trip was the perfect solution, as we were able to go at our own pace, without worrying about any time limit pressures from a group bus trip. Our driver was great! He showed up right at our door perfectly on time and he made us feel so comfortable right from the beginning. He drove safely the entire time and we made it to the 3 monasteries with no issues and plenty of stops and times for pictures along the way. As for the monasteries, they were very beautiful. The whole area is stunning with the mountain formations and then seeing the monastery just right on top was very picturesque. The first one we stopped at was the most assessable, St. Stefanos. There was no stairs to climb to enter it, so my mom had no problem going inside and she really loved it. The second one was Varlaam and it was a bit more challenging. It had a decent amount of stairs that wasn’t too bad, but my mom decided to wait outside rather than attempt it. It was very beautiful inside, and the view from the top was amazing. The last monastery was the Great Meteoron. We got to get some great pictures of it from outside, but unfortunately I didn’t realize that it was closed on Tuesdays so that was my bad. But despite that, my family still enjoyed the entire trip. Be prepared, it’s about a good 3.5-4 hours trip in the van. We got little bathroom break stops along the way which helped to break it up. The restaurant we stopped at for lunch was very good and exactly what we needed after such a long day. Overall, this was a great experience. We got to see the monasteries in such a relaxed manner and it was exactly what we needed in order to accommodate my mom’s mobility limitations. Everyone had a great day and we enjoyed our time with our driver the whole way.
