Before we go into DMZ area and do ID Check, will look through 3 stops - Brdige of freedom, Mangbaedan Altar, Steam locomotive destroyed during Korean war in Imjingak Park. Imjingak was built in 1972 for the benefit of displaced North Koreans. It is at the end of National Road No. 1, which civilians can access.
Mangbaedan is an altar where North Korean refugees in the South hold ancestral rites on the two biggest national holidays to their parents and grandparents left behind in the North.

We are fresh off of our day-long private tour to the DMZ with Tiger. It was really a special day. I cannot recommend Tiger more highly and his organizing colleagues at PLK Tours. If debating a general tour versus a private one, in a general tour one gets to tick a box and visit what feels like a historical curiosity and to say “been there.” To really experience the DMZ, what it means, its historical context, and to gain a deeper understanding of it, the private tour is the way to go. Speaking specifically to our tour with Tiger, I cannot say enough about what a wonderful day we had. Logistically, the pick-up was on-time. His car was very nice and comfortable. His driving was good. To the technical parts of the tour, Tiger had been in the Korean military and had patrolled and served in the DMZ for years. He was able to talk about the DMZ with a depth of personal understanding that you cannot get on a bus tour. He had a thorough grasp of the history but, more importantly, was really able to bring the events of the past 125 years to life in a relevant and useful way. The tour company was very clear that the tour within the DMZ was on a tour bus, joining another tour, as individuals are not allowed to visit the DMZ unescorted or on small tours. For three hours we were in the larger group but Tiger was with us for that whole time and gave us a personalized level of detail and commentary we would have missed with just the bus tour. After we parted ways with the larger group we visited more things around the DMZ that the bus tour did not do. At first you second-guess your decision to pay more for the personal tour since you join a bus tour but there is a difference and the additional cost for the personalized experience is worth it. If you are making the effort to visit the DMZ and want more than just a box-check that you were there, definitely choose the personal/private tour. You’ll come away with a real in-depth knowledge and you’ll make the most of your day at DMZ. And, if you can get Tiger as your guide, highly recommended.

Honestly, SJ was quite possibly the best tour guide we ever had (and we've traveled quite extensively). First, he was punctual. Second, the vehicle was a brand new, comfy Kia Carnival. Perfect for our family of 4. Third, the man was a walking historian. Our drive was punctuated by awesome anecdotes and tidbits about the Korean history and the War. Last, he was just a nice, affable guy. Easy to like. Even with a little rainy weather, our tour was the highlight of our trip to Seoul. Thank you so much SJ!!

This was the best day of our trip to Korea. Tiger was the best tour guide. Highly recommend him as a host. His knowledge of Korea and stories kept us entertained for the entire day.

Joseph, our tour guide was knowledgable, patient and flexible. He arrived at our hotel early and patiently waited for us since we were still gathering our things. On our arrival at the DMZ site, Joseph took care of any paperwork needed and gave us a brief history of the site. I would definitely recommend Joseph and Viator.
