La Leona is a unique deep blue waterfall rooted between two canyons. It’s one of the few, if not the only, one in Costa Rica with this characteristic.
Its water comes from the “white river” or “Rio Blanco” that finds its source in the skirts of the Volcano Rincon de la Vieja. The color of the water is just amazing, between blue and turquoise, which is explained by the presence of sulfur. It’s definitely a must in this area!

Stunning Views—Not Recommended for Those with Mobility Issues

2.00While the waterfalls are absolutely stunning, I want to share a heads-up for anyone with mobility concerns. I recently had knee surgery (10 weeks ago) so we called ahead to ask about the terrain. We were told it would be quite easy, but just 20 steps into the downhill trek, I realized it was much more challenging than described. While the guides are encouraging, I felt there was a bit of a disconnect between their "keep going" attitude and the actual physical difficulty of the trail. I decided to stop at the first beautiful swimming hole, which was the right call for me—the rest of my group mentioned the next 150-200 yards were quite rugged and challenging. It’s a gorgeous spot, but please trust your instincts regarding your physical limits!

5.00Ever is the best! He did exactly what we asked, and took us on a three day adventure through the forest, to waterfalls, jet, skis, and rafting! He really made our trip special and we can’t wait to go back! Costa Rica is very beautiful and the people are all happy and nice. It’s one of our favorite countries to visit.
