Enjoy a unique experience that's simply not possible by just watching on TV! Come face to face with Japanese culture that has been kept alive through many years, such as the presence of a referee which began in the Sengoku period (about 1467-1603), and the use of vivid 'kesho-mawashi' ceremonial aprons and the ring entering procession which have continued from the Edo period (1603-1868), on this tour guided by a National Government Licensed English Guide Interpreter knowledgeable about sumo wrestling. Watch sumo, Japan's national sport, from comfortable 2nd Floor chair seats. All tour participants will receive "The Sumo," a booklet about sumo (in English); and Banzuke-hyo, a table of rankings, as a gift! It has easy-to-understand explanations about the origins of sumo wrestling, match rules, reading the banzuke list, enjoying the ceremony, and more, so feel free to use it during the sumo viewing.

We thoroughly enjoyed this tour thanks to our awesome guide Yukiko-san. 😁 My husband signed us up for this tour so I came in without knowing what to expect. Upon entering the tour office, Yukiko greeted every guest with perfect English and gave us a 30-min background introduction with sumo that was definitely necessary for a rookie like me. Even though 30-min was barely enough to cover all the ground, she did an excellent job explaining the history of sumo, our tournament schedule for the day and the to-dos in the sumo stadium. We were lucky to visit on the second to last match of September so the hype among the crowd was high. I thought we would have more than enough time to wander around the stadium, but it turned out there was just so much to see and do that we had to squeeze time in between to enjoy the chanko nabe downstairs and buy some cute souvenirs. Yukiko was very attentive to the needs of the guests and would explain between each match with a detailed curated list of each player's background. It was very sweet of her to give my husband the towel with his favorite player's name on it to cheer ahead of the game! I came out of the game knowing so much more about sumo and will start watching it with my husband on NHK back home. Thanks so much for your hospitality and everything you do, Yukiko-san!

Did the sumo tour with Yukiko, she was fantastic and so enthusiastic. Not just a tour guide but a true (and big time) sumo fan! She knew all the details about every one of them, including fun facts, their tournament record, etc. A great way to learn about what sumo is and the ins and outs of how it works. I’m glad we did it as we would have not understood many things just going on our own or trying to read about it.

The tour guide was amazing and enthusiastic about sumo. She did a great job explaining the culture and history. Once we entered the venue, you can feel the history of the event hit you. Seeing the rikishi trying to topple one another was incredible and had us on the edge of our seats. Overall a great experience!

The experience was seamless from start to finish, directly outside the meeting point you could easily find the hosts and they escorted you where you needed to go from then on. TK was our guide and he was perfect! He kept us informed from the briefing at the start all the way through to little facts about the wrestlers throughout the tournament. Would 100% recommend!

  • Fantastic Sumo Experience – Five Stars

Transportation was self-arranged to the meeting point, and our guide TK gave a clear and detailed introduction in excellent English. After showing us to our seats at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Sumo Arena, he stayed to watch the matches with us. Using a small whiteboard, TK highlighted each wrestler’s unique style and key moments, making the whole event easy to follow and exciting. The cost was higher than the ticket price , but without TK’s explanations, non-Japanese speakers would likely struggle to understand—or even get tickets at all. Absolutely worth it, and I would rate this tour five stars without hesitation!
