Pleasant, but slightly let down, for the $90 price tag, I expected a lot more! At the very least a basic refreshment would have been nice. The train journey is around the estate which itself is hardly tour worthy, however the host was very knowledgeable and went through the history of the line, the estate and pointed out flora and fauna. The house tour is somewhat underwhelming and then you’re corralled in to an old stable/shed to watch a 20 minute home video showing various generation of the estate and their employees. The distillery was marginally interesting. The Lady of the estate seemed disinterested to the point of being put out that paying tourists were in the place. Ultimately this is a money grab and is greatly overpriced. Prices need to be reduced by a minimum of 50% to make this a value for money attraction. I would not recommend at the current rates.

Well where do I start. Michelle explained the tour and was right on the money. We boarded the train and we chatted with Tyrone and Shaun, who both knew their stuff, what an asset to the organisation. The train is just magical and was renovated quite close to where I live in England. We were allowed to step on the fireplate and toot the horn and those guys just love their job. What an experience, we WILL be back.

St. Nicholas Abbey is a stunning historic estate set on a hillside with the greenest, most peaceful views. The staff were welcoming and kind. After a long drive through traffic, we arrived just in time and were graciously allowed onto the 2:00 p.m. train as it was preparing to depart. The short train ride offers lovely scenery and ends with a breathtaking view at Cherry Tree Hill before returning to the Great House. The tour was informative and provided great insight into the history and rum-making process. The only disappointment was the rum-tasting experience—the host’s humor came across as abrasive and left a less-than-ideal final impression. Still, I’m glad we visited. The estate beautifully acknowledges its complex past as a sugar plantation while showcasing its transformation into a working distillery and national treasure.

This was absolutely the highlight of our holiday - booked the train journey, guided house tour and rum tasting. Started with a 20 min train ride on the beautiful steam train up to Cherry Hill for some photos (also purchased a few souvenirs and a fresh coconut from some local vendors) - the guide Tonia was just superb and went into great detail about the history of the estate and the train itself which was fascinating. Then alighted for the guided house tour which again was really informative. The 20 minute home video footage from the 1930’s was my favourite bit and really took you back to what it would’ve been like. I’m not the biggest fan of rum but enjoyed the tasting - loved the passion fruit liqueur and the sugar cane syrup too. Simon was a fabulous host and talked us through the rums and some of the additional family history which was a lively personal touch! Bought a bottle of 8 year old rum for my dad - not cheap at $125 but a quality product and some coffee beans, cane sugar, etc. All beautifully packaged. Simon - we’ll pop you a Challenge coin and patch in the post when we get home :)

We loved this place. The distillery was really interesting experience to hear how it was made, and taste was lovely and meant we didn’t need to visit Mount Gay. What stood out for me was the guides from the house to the train. They really love working here for the owners, it is locally owned unlike Mount Gay (Remy Cointreau). The history the shared was interesting. The house tour was interesting the train journey was worth the trip. The restaurant/cafe food was really good and beautiful location. Never written about a toilet before but these loos near the cafe were incredible!

Overall a good visit. We enjoyed the train ride and learning about the country history and railway. Great guide. The mansion tour was okay but very brief. Rum tasting also very brief without any detailed explanation of the rums, etc. expensive for what you get overall. train ride is with it, not sure about the house tour and rum taking for that price.

The tour guide we had at 10:15 on the 28th July was very thorough and answered all questions with grace. She had extensive knowledge of history outside of the abbey and around the island. Went into detail about Benedict cumberbatche’s role in Barbados. All the staff, from the grounds people to the train drivers, were very pleasant and kind!

We visited for the first time Feb 2024. The experience was very good so we decided to take family back this year and standards have really dropped. The train journey has been made longer which was good We had a rushed tour of the house due to the rain and timing of the train trip ( this was an hour late due to the weather) our booking was for 10am we were left standing around at the station for 40 mins before they decided to take us on the house tour first. After the train trip we were directed to the rum tasting which consisted of 2 very small samples (a lot less than last year). We then went to the restaurant for lunch, food was good but the rum punch was more like fruit juice. All in all this was a poor experience for the price. It has gone downhill so would not recommend visiting. Mount Gay rum tasting experience is better but the downside is no train journey or plantation house.

This is a beautiful old plantation house, seeped in history and still used to farm sugar cane and distill rum. it’s very much a ‘cottage industry’ and you could see them sticking labels on bottles etc. It was so good to see this Jacobean mansion being looked after so lovingly. All of the staff, especially those on the steam train (our conductress was ace!) and in the shop/cafe were super friendly and warm. We did the steam train up to Cherry Tree Hill (unfortunately it lashed it down so the views got obscured!) and then the tour of the house and the distillery. We then stayed and had a gorgeous little lunch on the patio while listening to a local musician perform. The perfect setting with lush, tropical forests all around us. The only criticism l had, and it’s a big one, was that the history of this plantation and a lot of what happened to the enslaved workers wouldn't have been pretty at all. It was evil and it was wrong. I didn’t feel this was acknowledged; in fact it was whitewashed over. I was left feeling very uncomfortable about this.

Poorly managed. Google maps brings you to a dirt road back entrance. Nicholas has poor signage. One tiny sign mixed in with 10 others far away from where Google maps guides you This is such an issue you can go to Google Maps. Type in “professional scammers”. Two guys have made a side hustle of scam g tourists trying to visit Nicholas sign the directions and signage is so poor. Why doesn’t the police, Tourism Ministry or Nicholas address this issue?? It is literally so obvious and in the open that again. Google Maps has an entry for these scammers.
