Journey from Wellington to Wētā Workshop—and back again—in our dedicated shuttle.

With daily tours departing from Wakefield Street in the city centre, we invite you to sit back and enjoy stunning harbour views, insider stories of film and creativity and even spot the iconic Wellywood sign on the way to our creative home in Miramar.

Wētā Workshop has been making cool stuff for film and TV since 1987. Our crew has brought to life beloved characters and epic special effects for iconic blockbusters like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and Avatar.

Step into Wētā Workshop Experiences and explore a world of creativity, physical effects and movie magic on a guided tour through our creative home base.

You'll learn about the making of props, creatures and costumes created for your favourite films. Get hands-on with unique pieces from our many departments, catch our artists at work and discover how we’ve grown into the award-winning workshop you see today.

This tour takes place in a functioning workshop, so it can get a little drafty. We recommend bringing an extra warm layer or two.

There is no luggage storage in the transfer vehicle, Wētā Cave or at in tour space.

Photography is strictly prohibited in all tour spaces, unless specified by the tour guide.

From your favourite films to larger-than-life exhibitions: during our Wētā Workshop Tour learn about the practical effects created for The Lord of the Rings, The Chronicles of Narnia, the record-breaking Gallipoli: The scale of our war and more! Wander through Manufacture Alley, interacting with the tools and technology of our creative departments. I went to both the Auckland and Wellington Weta workshops, and I definitely preferred the Auckland one--it was more interactive and fun. This one was too many people packed into tight rooms while you get a bit of a lecture on the process of making 3D models and makeup. It had more real-movie props than Auckland, though, and it was neat to see some of the props. I just wish there were half as many people on the tour. It was too crowded in.

Fascinating look at some behind the scenes movie making magic. As a LOTR fan it was cool to see props and costumes used in the film, and the guide was very well informed about all of it. I did the transfer from Wellington CBD as I don't have a car, and as a bonus our van driver was equally entertaining and informative. A great experience all around.

Polite and friendly driver took us to the location. Tour guide (Maggie?) was well versed on the history and purpose of the workshop. She spoke with passion on the variety of activities carried out there and the quality of the work produced. Very informative and enjoyable morning. Highly recommend a visit.

Amazing trip and behind the scenes experience-Louis was a fabulous tour guide and Derek,our bus driver,was the same-💯would recommend even if you are not an avid Lord of the Rings fan-there is so much more to this tour than that

Great tour from the moment we were picked up in Wellington. The driver had been an orc in LOTR and had lots of interesting stories. The tour guide was energetic and knew her stuff! It was wonderful to see props, even wear a few and take photos, as well as chat with creators. Would recommend to anyone, not just Middle Earth fans, but fantastic for us LOTR fans especially.
