This was a mixed experience. Good: Ha Long Bay is very pretty, at least if it’s not foggy. Staff are friendly. The food is good, though they charge for any liquid to have with lunch or dinner, even water. Beds are comfortable and there’s a nice little balcony. Not so good: The bathroom is very inefficiently designed - a large tub that virtually no one will use and a shower with no walls right beside the toilet. Rooftop seating is nice but spoiled a bit by the music the young bartenders put on to entertain themselves (turned down when I asked, but turned up again shortly afterwards). Kayaking sounds nice but part of it is in dirty, plastic-strewn water - we were motivated to use the shower after that. Excursion on 2nd day is good if you like bicycling and/or swimming (water seemed better there but who knows), otherwise not that interesting. Ship is decent but other ships looked more modern and nicer. I would say it’s optional to spend significant time both here and in Ninh Binh
