Your experience starts at our Meeting Point, next to S. Bento Station and you will meet your guide that will drive you to the Amarante, our first stop. On your way to the Douro Region, your guide will give you insights regarding the Portuguese history, development and cultural facts of portuguese heritage.
Amarante
Amarante, our first stop, features the majestic Serra do Marão and the river Tâmega, which flows through the city and adds charm to its picturesque houses. The city, possibly founded by the Roman centurion Amarantus, links the provinces of Minho and Trás-os-Montes. In the 13th century, St. Gonçalo, a Benedictine monk and the city's patron saint, built a bridge over the Tâmega. Amarante is also renowned for its sweets, including papos de anjo, brisas do Tâmega, toucinho do céu, bolos de São Gonçalo, and galhofas, which can be found in local cake-shops and cafés.

I’ve toured Douro valley three times - once on my own, with à small (7 ppl) group and this tour with 30 people. I DO NOT recommend this and I’d never book with Living Tours again. They market the tour às “small group minbus” this not small group!! It’s incredibly impersonal. They gave us two different meeting points, both of which were incorrect which made us arrive late. when we arrived we had to scan a barcode (which was not obvious) to find our tour guide among à sea of tour guides. There was a vegan in our group - I informed them when I booked the tour and the day before. I was assured we would be accommodated, we were not. The tour guide did not get the message. The boat ride was with multiple groups só there were about 75-80 ppl and on the boat — way too many people to make it enjoyable. They didn’t provide snacks or wine on the boat ride, you had to pay for the wine. The other tour I went on provided loads of wine and snacks às part of the tour. The lunch was good but the wine was AWFUL! How do you serve wine that tastes like vinegar when you’re in the region of PT with the best wine 🤯🤯?? At the end of the lunch they didn’t give us coffee bc they were too busy preparing for the next group to arrive. The tour guide (Pedro Manu) was extremely knowledgeable and the driver (Rui) was very safe. This review is for the tour company, not tour guide.

The Douro Valley is beautiful but I think there may be a better way to experience it than this tour. The guide seemed in interested in providing any unique information about the area. The extent of the information provided was something you could learn in 5 minutes from a Wikipedia article. The wine tasting experience was weak to say the least:. Didn’t get to see anything at the vineyard essentially went to a large tasting room and tried 3 wines. Went to bathroom and got back bus. Not even close to the “ guided visit of a renown winery” as promised. The town of Amarante was unremarkable from what I saw. We were dropped off and given some directions to a cafe. The River cruise wasn’t that fun The lunch was pretty good at a cool restaurant We didn’t even get to stop at the viewpoint mentioned in tour.

Was well organized and timed. Our guide, Castro, was excellent, charming and very clear and informative. The stops were great, the winery stop was beautiful and quite interesting. Lunch was a wonderful Portuguese meal with great service. Lastly, we did a small river cruise, however, there was no guide, information or even music. Our group was just on a boat with beautiful scenery. Overall, the tour was definitely worth doing especially since it is relatively far and there are so many vineyards.

It’s a slow pace tour that brings you to breathtaking landscapes of the Douro Valley. Good wine tasting and excellent lunch. We learned a lot of interesting stuff about the region. I recommend to everyone who goes to Portugal.

The day was planned perfectly! Tania was an amazing tour guide. The Duoro Valley is so beautiful. The lunch at the estate was delicious.
