Join our local-guided volcano tour to Fagradalsfjall—led by those who witnessed the eruptions first-hand.
This is more than a hike. It’s a deep, real experience into Iceland’s volcanic heart, guided by locals who live near the eruption zone and were among the first to explore it safely after the 2021 event.
Walk across dramatic lava fields, view steaming craters, and gain rare insights into the geology and eruptions that shaped the Reykjanes Peninsula. We don’t just take you to the volcano—we also visit the evacuated town of Grindavík, the colorful geothermal area of Seltún, and the mysterious lake Kleifarvatn.

Can children join the volcano hike? What age is safe? Yes. Children 6+ are welcome on private tours where we adjust the pace. Group tours suit teens and adults because they follow a set schedule. We do not recommend this hike for very young kids.
Can I book the self-drive option without a rental car or if I plan to take a taxi to the meeting point? No. The self-drive rate is only for travelers with their own rental vehicle for the full duration of the tour. There is no option to ride in the guide’s vehicle if you arrive by taxi, transfer, or shuttle. If you don’t have a rental car, please book the pickup option.
Important: If you are arriving directly from Keflavík Airport, please note that pickup for small-group tours is not possible from the airport. In this case, we recommend a private tour, which can include custom pickup at the airport for an additional fee.
How does the self-drive option work for this tour? With the self-drive option, you meet the guide in Grindavík. You follow in your own car to the volcano parking area (parking fees apply). After the hike, you can follow the guide in your car to Seltún and Kleifarvatn or explore independently. Transport beyond the volcano is not included, but you’re welcome to join the convoy in your vehicle.
Where do I go if I drive myself? The meeting point is in Grindavík town at 10:45 am. You'll receive the exact location in your confirmation email after booking. Grindavík is only 10 minutes from the Fagradalsfjall trail. The tour starts by exploring the area that was evacuated during the most recent eruptions.
How does the self-drive option work after the hike? When booking the self-driving option, you will meet our guide at the designated point shown in your confirmation (usually Grindavík). From there, you follow in your own car to the volcano parking area. Please note parking fees are not included.
Is the hike suitable for seniors or people with limited fitness? Yes. Private tours are best if you prefer a slower pace or extra breaks. The hike is moderate but requires steady footing on uneven ground. The guide will adapt to your comfort level.
What should I wear or pack for the volcano hike? Wear layered, waterproof clothing and sturdy hiking shoes. Bring water, snacks, gloves, and your phone or camera. We provide walking poles and crampons if needed.
Can I change or choose my pickup location? Yes—private tours include pickup at your hotel or Airbnb. Group tours meet at Bus Stop #3 Lækjargata in Reykjavík.
Please note: Glowing lava is only visible during active volcanic phases, which are not guaranteed at the time of your tour. Regardless, the hike through this recent eruption zone offers unforgettable scenery, volcanic craters, and raw natural beauty.
Only the transportation option back to Reykjavík includes stops at Seltún and Kleifarvatn, as they are along the route to the city.
Tour duration and hiking time to Fagradalsfjall Volcano may vary based on weather conditions. We prioritize flexibility to ensure a safe, comfortable, and rewarding experience in all conditions.
This volcano tour operates in full alignment with local weather patterns. We may adjust departure time or route to deliver the best possible views, safety, and comfort during your experience.
This tour follows official guidance related to volcanic activity. In the event of area closures or restricted access near Grindavík or the eruption zone, we’ll reroute the experience to equally scenic and safe volcanic landscapes.
During winter months, road conditions in Iceland can be unpredictable due to snow, ice, or strong winds. If you’re driving to the meeting point, please allow extra travel time beyond GPS estimates to ensure a safe, stress-free arrival for your Fagradalsfjall Volcano hike.
By booking this tour, you confirm that you have read and understood the full tour description. While the volcano area is publicly accessible, joining a guided tour is a personal choice made for added safety, local knowledge, and deeper context. In the case of an active eruption, the itinerary may be adjusted to prioritize access to the current eruption site and main viewing areas. Although we may follow the same trail used by others, this remains a fully guided experience.

This adventure was totally unexpected and absolutely amazing. It was pure luck to be here during an active eruption but it was a completely a perfect experience thanks to our guide. Guðný was so knowledgable about volcanology, geology and history. It was easily the best experience of a lifetime.

We did the Fagradalsfjall Volcano tour with Gudni. He is an amazing guide who not only told us about the volcanos and geo thermal areas we toured but really taught us a lot about Icelandic culture. It was a very cool tour.
