Visiting the hatchery was so cool! Learning about their conservation efforts and things we can do to help prevent extinction of species, plus getting to see some kiwi running around in their nocturnal enclosures was an unforgettable experience! We also got to see a kiwi egg getting ready to hatch which was a once in a lifetime moment.

We did the “Behind the scenes” tour and learned so much with a knowledgeable guide! Bridget was very knowledgeable and patient with all our questions! The end with a close-up Kiwi “Obelix” was so cool!

The conservation efforts at the national kiwi hatchery are amazing. It was such a great opportunity to learn about all of NZ’s conservation efforts, but the details of how the kiwis are being preserved was fantastic to learn about. We even got to see some, which was a treat!!

I was quite excited about visiting this kiwi farm. However, the experience left me really upset because of how I was treated by a young girl guide, who I understand is also an intern. I’m fully aware that photos and videos are not allowed, as light can make kiwi birds nervous. Before entering, I removed my smartwatch and put my DJI camera back into my bag. I only kept my phone in my pocket because my bag was too small to hold all my equipment. When we were inside the dark room where the kiwi lives, my husband asked where the kiwi bird was. I simply pointed towards the viewing window, without realising that the light from my phone screen might affect the kiwi bird. At that moment, the intern spoke to me very rudely and asked me to leave immediately. I apologised multiple times and explained that I hadn’t realised the phone screen could be an issue. She repeatedly asked if I had taken any photos and told me to delete them. I calmly explained that I hadn’t taken any photos at all. She then walked away and left me alone in the gift shop. Later, a staff member from the gift shop kindly asked what had happened and explained that if I simply put my phone back into my pocket, I could have continued watching the kiwi bird. However, by then, the intern had already asked me to leave. I may have misunderstood the situation, but the way it was handled felt unnecessarily harsh and unkind. Considering we paid a significant amount and travelled across half the world to learn about and appreciate kiwi birds, the experience was truly disappointing. I completely respect the rules put in place to protect the kiwi birds. However, I believe the situation could have been handled with a gentler reminder rather than immediately asking a visitor to leave. Education and kindness go a long way, especially for guests who genuinely care and are trying to do the right thing.

Great experience. We saw two adult kiwis and a kiwi chick. Very informative and not too overwhelming for the kids. 100% recommend it.

Very disappointed, we saw only two kiwi! For the price of it, and being a hatchery, I thought we would be able to see more…. As much as I understand that the goal isn’t to keep any, and the place tries to make money to be able to help more kiwis, I really felt robbed… it should be mentioned when booking that there might not be much to see on that day or something… having the descriptions and facts… well sadly, I can google that 😅 the main purpose was to actually see kiwi (and the no photo thing…. Well… ) All together, if it was 10€, the review would be different…

Great tour with our teenagers. Very informative, interesting and we got to see a Kiwi. Highly recommended and it's all indoors so a great activity for a rainy day.
