Find out about the political and social background of the Roman Empire before, during and after the construction of the Colosseum. Get to know its purpose and its role within the Roman society.
Foro Romano
A stone's throw from the Colosseum, you can find the Roman Forum: the political, religious, judicial and financial center of Rome and all the Roman Empire. This is where a city that once was barely a regional power became the core of the mightiest empire of the ancient times. This is where the Romans shaped the politics, laws and administrative systems that shaped the world we live in today, and affect the way we think about ourselves and our society. As the first core of Rome grew larger on the close by Palatine hill, the Romans started to settle also in the lower areas. The area occupied by the Roman Forum was once only a marshy land, but already under the regal period was chosen as the social, political and religious center of the city. Here you can find some of the most important buildings of the ancient Rome: the house of the Senate, temples, basilicas and much more. Plunge yourself in the heart of the Roman Empire by visiting the Roman Forum!

Attend a Colosseum Guided Tour on Thursday 9 September 2025, with Umi. Umi was very knowledgeable and was a charming raconteur. The tour was both educational and informative - and truly wonderful experience.

My wife and I spent our honeymoon in Rome, and in the lead up we connected with David Battaglino at the recommendation of my coworker. What an absolute Godsend David was. David gave us a spectacular, informative and hilarious tour of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Pantheon. Both are must take with David. He has such a passion and appreciation for his city and it's history. He also went above and beyond for my wife and I and helped set us up on tours that he did not lead. He facilitated our tour of Pompeii/Amalfi Coast, the Borghese Museum, The Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's. To top it off his wife separately also took us on a tour of some of the neighboring towns of Rome and the catacombs. Nemi in particular will stand out in our memory. David put together our entire Rome itinerary, and was the true MVP of our trip. We are both eternally grateful, and already are looking forward to going back.

This tour was easy to book, was a reasonable price and great communication by City Walkers to get to the meeting point. There was a lot of people initially at the meeting point but then we ended up splitting into three groups. This is where we met David B. David was very knowledgeable of Rome’s architecture, history, and gave us the best recommendations for food and shopping. He is very witty, which we loved, and always had something funny or informative to say about everything in sight. I would come back to Rome just to get a tour from him again. Thank you David, you made our time in Rome very memorable!

Our tour guide was Radu, he was obviously very knowledgeable of the site and also extremely funny. It was both entertaining and informative. I’d recommend doing a tour over the self guided walkthrough. 110% worth the price.

Our tour of the Colosseum with David Battaglino was nothing short of brilliant. David, a walking encyclopaedia of Roman history, is passionate about his subject and shares his knowledge vividly, perhaps because he previously worked as a journalist and wrapped in his dry sense of humour. He vocalises vivid images of the gladiatorial fights, making you feel you were one of the seventy thousand people in the audience, witnessing a slice of Emperor Titus’s 100-day marathon of events in 80AD after the opening of this spectacular building. Highly recommended tour.
