We hit the jackpot with our guide Jorge, a biologist who shared his knowledge of the Ria Celestun with passion and humor, making the 1 hour 15 minute drive out of Merida enjoyable and informative. The boat tour of the biosphere was wonderful, we saw crocodiles and several bird species, including a colony of flamingos, pelicans, and several spoonbills. Jorge had the boat captain cut the engine when we entered a mangrove forest so we could appreciate the life around us. It was magical! I would have loved more time in the Biosphere. We took a short drive to the beach club where we had a delicious and fresh meal at Las Palomas (shrimp ceviche, fresh fish, conch and mojitos!). Even though the wind had picked up, we took a dip in the Gulf of Mexico and it was lovely. Highly recommend! This is a wonderful way to spend time out of the city and experience a relatively rare ecosystem.

Eric was our guide on the Celestun preserve tour. The tour was one of the highlights of our stay in Merida, A small group of 6 passengers were driven from Merida in a newer minibus to the Celestun preserve for a two hour boat tour. On the boat tour we saw 3 crocodiles, numerous birds including pink flamencos which we Witnessed in flight (a truly awesome experience!) and also a large flock standing in the water. From the preserve we drove the short distance to the town of Celestun, where we had an excellent seafood lunch at the Perifiria Beachside hotel and Restaurant. My Wife has problems with her knees, but both Eric and our boat operator were extremely helpful in assisting her when she entered and exited the boat. Eric was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide who made the day trip a highlight for both my Wife and me. I highly recommend this tour.

Fantastic tour with our guide Eric, easy meeting place, comfortable transport and well organised. Celestun reserve was so beautiful, with so much birdlife, and of course the beautiful flamingos. The boat trip was a lot of fun and we also got to see crocodiles, raccoons and lots of amazing birds. There was water on hand and you can buy snacks at the boat launch. We also enjoyed the beach restaurant and relaxing for a couple of hours before returning to Merida around 4ish. Many thanks to Eric and the team!

We greatly enjoyed this tour, for which Jorge, our tour guide was uniquely qualified, as he was a trained biologist with a solid knowledge base on the reserve and the bird life within it. The group was small, our family of three and one other couple, and we were fortunate enough to observe quite a number of flamingoes. We greatly enjoyed all of the adventure despite encountering a strong rain storm while out on the water. The choice of restaurant at the beach was also very good and we enjoyed a selection of very good local culinary options.

We had a great time on the boat tour around Celestun. The excursion took us around quite a few different spots and our tour guide, Jorge, provided a great amount of information on the ecosystem and all of the animals we saw during the tour. Ending the tour with a lunch accompanied by some leisure time on the beach was absolutely fantastic. Jorge was very friendly and welcoming and made our time on this tour much more enjoyable. The listing was on point and you do need 500 pesos per person to do the boat tour but it was well worth the price!

It was a rainy time but we did get to see the flamingos and other birds as well as a nice tour of the mangroves. Lunch was very good and a pleasant experience. A surprising issue was as we were arriving at the marina our guide informed us that the boat captain would not go out for less than 3000 pesos. We were all prepared to pay 500 per person per what the tour described as an extra. Since there were only five in our group we had to make the choice of either our guide finding an additional person at last minute or each of us coughing up another 100 pesos each. We ultimately agreed to do the latter which left somewhat of a bad taste in our mouths. A real shame. Not about the money but feeling like we were taken advantage of. The whole thing felt contrived.

We had Jorge as our guide for the trip. He is a biologist/guide; therefore, he is very passionate about the environment. He is a subject matter expert for the bio-system around the area of Celestun. We saw many wildlife during the boat tour, including the famous flamingos. We had an excellent day on the water. Jorge took us to a nice little beach front restaurant afterwards and had a nice lunch and a swim. Overall, I recommend this trip if you are in the area and if all possible, ask for Jorge as you guide.

Our guide Rodrigo was very knowledgeable and took us to Celestún and back. The Biosphere boat ride was nice to see the flamingos, although there weren’t many this time of year. Rodrigo explained each bird we saw ( but didn’t see any crocodiles). The beach club was nice, food was good and the white sand made it look tropical. There was a lot of seaweed at the waters/beach edge that you had to walk through to sandy bottom. Would have like to spend more time on the beach. The drive home took a bit longer than expected due to road issues but Rodrigo found a detour and dropped us off quickly. Would do this tour again in the warmer months to get a better immersive experience.
