Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station
Maunakea is a celebrated and storied place in the cultural traditions of Hawai'i. While it is the dwelling place of the goddess Poli'ahu it is also associated with the Hawaiian deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was considered the realm of the gods and in ancient times was kapu (forbidden) to all but the highest chiefs and priests. Occasionally Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) would make the long trek to the top, the last royal visitor being Queen Emma in 1881 who led her companions on the arduous 6 hour journey to the top to see the summit and rejuvenate herself in sacred Lake Waiau. The White Mountain Legends of the Mountain - Poli´ahu While today Maunakea is home to 13 international observatories and recieves thousands of visitors every year it remains a sacred place for the people of Hawai'i. On the the fourth Saturday of every month MKVIS hosts community speakers who speak about Mauna O Wakea from a cultural perspective.

It is fantastic. Knowledgeable staff, the correct amount of time at stops. Difficult to say if the sunset or the stargazing was the better experience. All of it is excellent.

The stargazing tour was incredibly smooth and well organized. It was truly an experience worth far more than the price, and we would highly recommend this stargazing tour! Snacks, jackets, and gloves were thoughtfully prepared, and the hospitality was excellent. Watching the sunset from above the clouds at the summit was breathtaking, and gazing up at the brilliant night sky while learning from the guide and searching for shooting stars made it an unforgettable experience. One thing to note is that the road has many rocks, so the ride can be a bit bumpy, and since the tour goes to high altitudes, those prone to motion sickness may want to take medication beforehand. Also, even in summer, the summit is very cold, so bringing a warm hoodie or wind jacket is recommended.

Great experience with Rob and Jessica. We were picked up at Hilo, joined a group from Kona then headed up to the summit of Mauna Kea for the sunset, with some interesting stops on the way. Jessica is full of knowledge of the volcano, the observatories, the rocks and Hawaiian culture. Would definitely recommend.
