Maunakea is a celebrated and storied place in the cultural traditions of Hawai'i. While it is the dwelling place of the goddess Poli'ahu it is also associated with the Hawaiian deities Lilinoe and Waiau. The summit was considered the realm of the gods and in ancient times was kapu (forbidden) to all but the highest chiefs and priests. Occasionally Hawaiian ali'i (royalty) would make the long trek to the top, the last royal visitor being Queen Emma in 1881 who led her companions on the arduous 6 hour journey to the top to see the summit and rejuvenate herself in sacred Lake Waiau. The White Mountain Legends of the Mountain - Poli´ahu While today Maunakea is home to 13 international observatories and recieves thousands of visitors every year it remains a sacred place for the people of Hawai'i. On the the fourth Saturday of every month MKVIS hosts community speakers who speak about Mauna O Wakea from a cultural perspective.

This was 100% worth it. Sometimes tours kinda feel like a trap or a waste of time/money, but seeing Mauna Kea sunset was 1000% worth it, SO beautiful. The stargazing through the telescope was also really cool. John and Tay were great tour guides.

Going to the summit of Mauna Kea was in the top three experiences of my life. Tay was our tour guide and he was excellent, I can't imagine someone having so much knowledge of the solar system. The tour was on point with all types of snacks, and hot chocolate when needed. Thanks for the great experience.

If you’re considering spending money on anything in Kona, spend it on literally anything other than this. I wish someone had warned me. Our driver told us on the way there that we “probably wouldn’t see anything” due to massive cloud cover. At that point, the company should have absolutely canceled the tour, offered a refund, or rescheduled us for another day. Instead, they pushed ahead knowing full well what the conditions were. When we arrived at the visitor center, it was freezing, raining, and they informed us the tour would be cut short and we’d have zero visibility. They knew the weather hours beforehand. By the time we reached the summit, it was about 30 degrees, raining hard, extremely windy, and we could see nothing—literally nothing but white fog—no sunset, no stars, no photos, no visibility at all. Several people in our group were on their second or third attempt after losing money previously, and everyone was understandably upset. To “make up” for the stargazing portion, they took us to a random parking lot with cars, telephone wires, and road traffic. It was honestly ridiculous. What makes this worse is how much time it steals. The entire day is gone. I even changed my flight and extended my stay an extra day for this experience—so between that and the tour, I’m out over $1,000. Our guide was lovely and did the best they could, but this should never have run. They knew the conditions. They chose to proceed anyway. And good luck getting a refund through TripAdvisor. Save yourself the money, the time, and the frustration. If conditions look bad, they will NOT cancel. You’ll just be stuck with an expensive, freezing, fogged-out disappointment.

It is a breathtaking and once in a lifetime experience, you will not regret this unique stargazing excursion. It is VERY cold and VERY windy up there so plan accordingly. It’s particularly tricky because it’s so warm down at sea level but by the time you get up to the summit not only is it cold and windy, but the sun goes down and it’s even chillier. The tour provides jackets and gloves. Put them on early to keep your body temp from dropping. It’s easier to stay warm than have to get your body temp back up when it drops. The guides are wonderful, knowledgeable, and they have great advice. Follow it. You likely will feel some changes from the tremendous altitude shift. It will be tolerable if you eat the snacks they give you and drink water.

If you're up to high altitudes and cold temps, but beautiful sunsets and stars, this tour is for you. Our tour guide, Logan, was great! She provided history, entertainment, and knowledge of the sights. Great personality to top it all off! Don't worry too much about being cold because the long parkas that are provided will keep you warm. However, for those of you who are not used to cold weather, you might want to bring a beanie, gloves and wear something other than mesh sneakers. The sights on this tour are something you shouldn't miss... breathtaking! Makala Logan!

Telescope viewing was a joke. Not worth the money. Spend your funds elsewhere. Our guide Tiffany was nice but that was it.

The Mauna Kea summit, sunset and stars experience was wonderful!! It was very well-organized and planned out. Our tour guide Jess was great and shared so much on folklore and culture and conservation efforts! We had a beautiful sunset at the summit above the clouds and then we went to watch all the stars come out. The wind was a bit nippy that evening, but they provided us all with warm coats. I highly recommend this tour!
