Jewish people first arrived in London in 1068, at the invitation of William the Conqueror. On this walking tour, we'll explore the hidden heritage of the Jewish community in the City of London, from the original Jewish quarter in the heart of the Square Mile right up to the present day.
This walk is in partnership with The Jewish Square Mile , a project to reveal and celebrate the history of the Jewish Cemetery and the Jewish people who lived in medieval London.

5.00The Jewish Square Mile walking tour around the City of London is an excellent experience. Hugely informative and engaging, it reveals a history of Jewish life at the heart of London dating back to the 11th century. Starting with the cemetery located beneath the Barbican Estate - and recently celebrated with the Jewish Square Mile exhibition - it looks at Jewish political and work life as well as key neighbourhoods within the 'Square Mile', many not generally associated with the Jewish Community. It also outlines a series of migrations including the important history which led to the creation of Bevis Marks Synagogue, a place with the most enduring Jewish community in the UK. The tour ends at the Kindertransport memorial in Hope Square at Liverpool Street Station marking a place of refuge for many children arriving in the UK just before the outbreak of war. Highly recommended.

4.00Excellent guide, very knowledgeable and willing to answer all our questions. The tour in a 21st century city of office blocks required some imagination to picture how the Jews lived many generations and centuries ago. A thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile tour.

5.00Thoroughly enjoyed this walking tour. Despite living in London for over 40 years we saw sights and heard stories that were totally new to us. We thought we knew the city well . Clearly not . Our guide Susanna was excellent and despite the tour schedule of 1.5 hours she went over and beyond and we ended up spending over 2.5 hours in her splendid company A really lovely way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon

3.00Guide is excellent but there is not really that much too see. Essentially, a history lesson not a great deal that’s current; for example , no admission to synagogue.

5.00This was a really interesting and informative tour. Susannah was enthusiastic and knowledgeable about this niche history. It paired very well with the Fiddler On The Roof performance but also related to European History as a whole. I highly recommend this tour. Thankyou Susannah!
