Colosseum
Your journey into antiquity begins with the Colosseum, one of the world’s most iconic sights. Your guide will call on their historical and archaeological expertise to tell you all about the battles, both physical and political, that played out in this incredible amphitheater. You might be surprised to learn that ‘Gladiator’ didn’t get everything right and that feats of ancient engineering even allowed the Romans to re-enact naval battles here.
Palatine Hill
The next stop takes you back to the very beginning. The Palatine Hill is the spot Romulus chose to found the city that would become Rome in 753 BC – a decision that ended in tragedy for his brother Remus. Here, steeped in history, you’ll enjoy spectacular views overlooking your next destination: the Roman Forum.

After doing this Coliseum tour, we now understand why it is one of the seven wonders of the world. As the Coliseum has been largely destroyed from the peak of it's existence, our incredible tour guide, Valerio, really made the experience worth while by having us use our imagination. He provided pictures, explanations, and stories of what used to happen there. He also provided the background into both the creation and destruction of this incredible empire. He welcomed and answered all questions. As he has an archeological background, he knew lots of special information. Additionally, his passion for history really made him an incredible person to learn from. We also appreciated how he briefly tied this place back to Christianity, as it is important to us.

The tour logistics were well-executed - we checked in quickly in the morning and barely had to wait in line at any of the sites (Roman Forum, Colosseum). Our tour guide, Valerio, was extremely knowledgeable, passionate about archeology, and hilarious with his dry takes on different facets of life. He really brought the Colosseum to life for us with his detailed narration while respecting history and never speaking in absolutes.

I do not believe you need a guide to experience the colosseum! You can do it on your own. Absolutely get the arena ticket though!

It was really unclear when we should be playing each section and we ended up skipping most of it and just walking on our own.

This tour was fantastic. Our guide started by explaining some of his background as we picked our way through the crowds, and his field of expertise on dynamics of war and power coloured every aspect of the tour, from the origins of Rome on Palatine Hill, to the significance of the triumphal arches, to the ways in which the Colosseum kept Romans entertained. The order of the trip seems to be flexible based on demand; our guide chose to take us to the Colosseum last based on line length, which seemed to be the right call. We wandered through the remains of the Roman Forum, had ample opportunity to photograph the ruins on Palatine Hill, and to get an overview of Circus Maximus down below. The Colosseum has been museumised inside—you might consider looping back around without your guide to take everything in at your own pace. One note to look out for: this was my first day in Rome and while getting my bearings at the Colosseum I was mobbed by the usual elements that prey on tourists. Look out for the friendly tour staff in their navy polos on the way there to avoid this!

Due to the tour operator, City Wonders, not informing us there would be a large marathon that morning, closing down all streets and transportation, we missed our window to get into the Colosseum. Even the guides and staff were an hour late! Money down the drain.

It is very hard to find tour operators. They did not have a blue shirt on. There was an accident nearby which closed off many streets and it was impossible to find meeting place. Ancient structure collapsed. Maria was extremely knowledgeable but hard to understand her dialect as she talked non stop and very fast. She had amazing pictures to show us of the original sites. It was extremely crowded and very hard to walk.

Our guide was fantastic, so knowledgeable and engaging with stories that brought history alive! Skip the line tours with a local guide who has a degree in architecture are the best!
