I was born and raised in Japan and have studied the art of Ikebana for over 10 years. I hold a master certificate from the Saga Goryu school, one of the oldest schools of Ikebana. Being bilingual in English and Japanese, I am able to share not only the techniques but also the deeper cultural meanings, philosophies, and symbolism behind this elegant art form.

Highly recommend! A fun and relaxing ikebana class in a quiet corner of inner city Tokyo. The instructor is very friendly, knowledgeable, and is fluent in English and Japanese.

Insightful experience in an elegant, tranquil environment, where you get to learn the rich history of ikebana, and practice what you learn on the spot to get the full experience. The teacher explains everything beautifully and she is very talented/kind so you can ask her any questions that you have when you are creating your own ikebana piece! You can go solo or with a group of friends - either way it is a fun experience to learn something new about Japan, not just from what you see on social media etc.

My husband and I loved Ikebana with Maya! She is an amazing teacher with decades of knowledge about Ikebana. We learned so much about the philosophy ikebana, its history, the different practices, and how it differs (vastly) from western flower arranging. Maya-sensei was super kind and patient (Ikebana is harder than it looks!) and answered all of our questions. It was so much fun to build our arrangements and see how everyone else's turned out. 100% recommend this experience for anyone visiting Tokyo — it's great for solo travelers or couples.

Took this ikebana class on a whim and was really blown away by how thoughtful and meditative the experience was. The instructor clearly knew their stuff but kept the vibe super relaxed and open. Even as a total beginner, I never felt out of place. We weren’t just putting flowers in a vase-- we learned about balance, space, intention, and the history behind ikebana. It honestly made me see ikebana in a completely new way. The instructor ended the session by giving us thoughtful feedback on our creations, which helped me see things from a different lens. It was incredibly helpful, informative, and added so much to the overall experience. If you’re looking for something calming, creative, and culturally rich, this is it.

Maya's ikebana class was an excellent beginner friendly way to learn about Japanese aesthetics. When we arrived, the room was already set up beautifully with individual ikebana basins, secateurs etc, and we were able to pick from a selection of seasonal flowers (sunflowers and summer tulips). After learning a bit about the history of ikebana we got started with the arranging. Using helpful diagrams we proceeded methodically arranging the flowers with many helpful tips along the way. In spite of the various rules and faux pas it was incredible how unique each of our arrangements turned out! Would definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in the visual elements of Japanese culture, as well as anyone interested in a relaxing indoor activity for individuals and small groups.
