This Day Trip from York provides the opportunity to explore the Yorkshire Dales National Park with an introduction to Herriot Country, including the picturesque town of Grassington (famous for its role as the fictional town of ‘Darrowby’ in the new ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ television series), Masham (traditional market town in Lower Wensleydale), Bolton Abbey (where you will see the stunning setting of the ruins of the 12th Century Augustinian Monastery) and the picture postcard traditional Yorkshire Dales limestone waterfalls at Linton. Enjoy personal attention from your guide on this small-group mini-coach tour, limited to 16 people.

Masham
We head off to Lower Wenslydale, with your Tour Guide telling you about the history and features of the area. The first stop is at the traditional market town of Masham in Lower Wensleydale, which gained its market charter over 700 years ago in 1251. Here you can learn some of the Town’s history from your guide and see the remains of an Anglo-Saxon cross shaft, thought to be around 1300 years old, at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, explore the quaint shops or just enjoy a leisurely Yorkshire brew and some cake in one of the cafes on the square – the choice is yours!
Grassington
Heading across Masham Moor where the sheep roam freely amongst the Heather and vast open landscape on our way over the tops to Nidderdale. The fantastic views and scenery over Gouthwaite Reservoir and miles of drystone walls make it perfect for some great photo stops. We arrive at the picturesque town of Grassington, famous for its role as the fictional town of ‘Darrowby’ in the new ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ television series, first aired in 2020. Here you will have 1.5 hours free time to explore the shops, Cafes and filming locations or even pop into the Devonshire Arms pub (The Drovers in All Creatures Great and Small) for a drink with the locals!

5.00A good tour that more than met out expectations. Well paced, varied stops (some purely scenic, others with more to see and do) and informative guide. Group size (about 16 or so) was just right to minimize time spent getting on/off the bus. It is a bit of a run from Yorkshire itself to the dales so be prepared and , as noted, things were overall well paced.

5.00Our guide, Chris was an excellent wealth of knowledge and the trip offered lovely opportunities to explore the Dales and enjoy all the communities had to offer. It offered a nice balance of exploration and travel.

5.00We had already enjoyed the Yorkshire Dales Day Trip earlier and were so impressed with Best of Britain tours that we wanted to take another one. We are very glad we did! Our guide, Chris, was very accommodating and knowledgeable. It is such a great way to learn, traveling in a comfortable van, with great drivers, beautiful scenery and meaningful information being imparted along the way.

5.00Perfect day for me. Mark our driver explained a lot of very interesting things along the way. The photo stops, toilet were perfectly planned. He was always in the small care with us 😉. Covered with a little rain but so it is the usual weather in the region. Do not trust the eternal blue sky of the magnificent series All creatures great and small 🫠. I recommend without hesitation!

5.00The trip with Chris was exactly what we wanted. We learned so much about the area, way beyond what we expected. He is extremely knowledgeable about the history, how things are connected and was charming. He has the historian’s flair for telling stories that make facts come alive.

5.00Mark was a great knowledgeable guide. The day was well paced. The country-side was amazing. So glad we dedicated a day to get out of York and experience the dales.
