Kinkakuji Temple
Kinkakuji Temple is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Kinkakuji is famous for its stunning architecture, with the top two floors covered in gold leaf and beautifully reflected in the surrounding pond. Originally built in the 14th century as a retreat for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the temple was later converted into a temple. The gardens surrounding the temple were also carefully designed in detail to showcase the beauty of the traditional Japanese landscape. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction.
Arashiyama
Arashiyama is a pleasant, natural tourist destination located in the western suburbs of Kyoto. The area has been a popular tourist destination since the Heian period (794-1185), when aristocrats enjoyed its natural surroundings. Arashiyama is especially popular in the fall for its autumn foliage and in the spring for its cherry blossoms. The Togetsu Bridge is the central trend mark of Arashiyama, from which you can enjoy a panoramic view of the vast river. Near the bridge, there is a boat pier, the famous bamboo grove street, many restaurants, and shopping for even the youngest visitors.

We had a wonderful day trip, thanks to our friendly and knowledgeable driver and guide, Riku. We visited Nara and Arashiyama. He was very accommodating of our itinerary with our children (4 & 7 years old) and suggested great activities and explained interesting facts for us all.

We had the best experience with Tatsuya! He not only provided great information but also took us to a great sushi restaurant and honored our requests. He never rushed us and understood/helped with my mobility issues, so it was the perfect way to see so many Kyoto and Nara highlights. My kids, 20 and 23, also had the best time learning from a peer.

An excellent experience for our family of three adults, including one member who required partial use of a wheelchair. From the start, the tour was thoughtful, flexible, and extremely well organized. We were treated to an expansive yet relaxed visit to Kinkaku-ji, the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and Shimogamo Shrine, all guided by Riku. Riku was knowledgeable, patient, and attentive, especially when it came to mobility considerations. He adjusted pacing as needed, suggested the most accessible routes, and made sure everyone felt comfortable and included throughout the day. Nothing ever felt rushed, and we were able to truly enjoy each location while also learning meaningful historical and cultural context. This tour struck a perfect balance between sightseeing and personal attention, making it ideal for families or groups with accessibility needs. We couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to Kyoto, and we highly recommend both the tour and Riku as a guide.

It is a full-day tour that is just over an hour's drive for those on a cruise. It was very helpful that the company picked us up from the cruise terminal. The company should use signage for pick-up at the port as the shore excursion is a busy one arranged by several passengers with each one looking for their respective ride. We managed to meet our driver, Tatsuya, after a few minutes of looking around, even though the meeting point was close by at the Ferris Wheel. It was very good to have a guide that is well-versed in english and who also seemed to enjoy his job. Before setting out, he briefed us about the itinerary and who would cover what costs. We had to cover one entrance fee and his lunch whilst he covered the tolls and parking fees - as stipulated in their advert. He also indicated a level of flexibility for requests that fell outside of the itinerary which we took him up on later in the trip. He also provided a late model vehicle that was exceptionally clean and comfortable. We drove through morning rush-hour traffic, surprisingly effortlessly. Our guide was very interactive and engaging, also using the opportunity to learn about other worldly things beside his tourism beat. He is a notably safe driver, being a youthly 22-year old. His boss is reportedly younger than he his - kudos to these young entrepreneurs! Our first call - the Kinkakuji Temple did not fail to impress. The Golden Temple, the lake and the pruned gardens was a good entry point after the rush-hour traffic. Despite the high volume of tourists, including a large group of school kids at the time, the walk through and photo ops were fulfilling. There were some good snacks on sale by local vendors. Definitely a good spot to visit. The second destination - Arashiyama - also did not disappoint. Beautiful foilage colors, lovely and serene environment enhanced by a calm river and boat rides in a picturesque valley, as well a hilltop perch to take in the vast scenery was certainly enjoyable. The walk up to the viewpoint can be demanding for the not-so-youthful and energetic persons but it is worth the trek to the top to appreciate the amazing vistas. Arashiyama is a must see stop as was evidenced by the busloads of local Japanese tourists who converged on this popular destination to absorb the beautiful autumn foliage (splash of color) and lovely vistas. It was quite a site to see the swarms of tourists overflowing on the narrow streets which added to the character of the place. The walk through the bamboo grove was also spectacular, especially to also observe some of the traditional japanese attire worn by many young women and girls and some japanese couples. There were plenty of rickshaws also bustling on the narrow streets. Tourists are spoilt for choice from the several restaurants on site. Our guide arranged a sit-down lunch at a halal restaurant to cater for our vegetarian diet. The venue was a good one that offered service in english and payment by card options. The lunch itself was equally good. We did not have sufficient time to cover the two remaining destinations - Gion and Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Part of the problem in this regard was the traffic factor to return to the port timeously. Therefore, we had agreed to forgo these two destinations and chose one of our own on the return drive, which Tatsuya had obliged. We arrived in good time to the port after making our deviation from the itinerary. The visit to Kyoto is a highly recommended one, although I was informed by other passengers who did the Nara trip that that destination is also good. Tatsuya informed us that he is from the Nara area and that the visit there is equally good. We strongly recommend the services of Tatsuya and his boss Riku as their company provided a very professional service,

I chose this tour because I was bringing my kids parents who have mobility issues and I wanted to make sure we could walk at their own pace. Or we could go back to the hotel when they get tired. We knew a bus tour wouldn’t have this flexibility. And this tour was perfect as Riku was very patient and made sure we were visiting sites that wouldn’t be strenuous for my parents. On time pick-up with easy communication, he gave us an extensive background at each site we visited, and a delicious ramen lunch. All in a comfortable vehicle.
