It’s hard to get more traditional than the Japanese bento box. In a way, it’s the perfect meal: it might include an egg roll, rice, pickled vegetables, breaded chicken and even nourishing miso soup, each in its own section of the bento box. The word is derived from an old Japanese word for convenience, and convenient this boxed meal certainly is. In this 3-hour cooking class in the center of Kyoto, learn the art of cooking up a bento box meal. Master chefs demonstrate and then turn the kitchen over to you. In the end, eat what you cook.

A fun way to learn and experience Japanese cooking. 12 people were individually supervised by 3 chefs. We learned about the food and what and why a Bento Box is prepared. We made delicious food.

This was a great experience. That chefs/hosts made it such a pleasant experience. We had done the Osaka Sun cooking walking tour the day before and then this and both were fantastic. Would do again.

Our time at Cooking Sun was well worth the $75 and the 3.5 hours of time spent. We had 3 lovely chefs helping us to make the ingredients from start to fill our Bento Box lunch Amongst the recipes were sushi, miso soup, gomaae, tempura, teriyaki chicken which were all delicious I would highly recommend this activity while in Kyoto

We booked the Bento-Box course and we had a brilliant experience. Whatever we cooked was incredibly tasty and all the different flavours added up to a perfect lunch-time snack. As I do not eat meat they easily changed my recipes so I created yummy tofu dishes instead of the meaty variety. I can only recommend this course, since the dishes as well as the overall atmosphere were fantastic.

My husband, niece, sister in law, and I took the Bento Box cooking class on July 3, from 9:30-12:30. We had a wonderful time chatting and learning not only how to prepare five dishes but also some Kyoto cooking traditions. Both instructors were so knowledgeable and encouraging. I’d highly recommend this activity for all ages.

Lovely instructor, with great English. Whole experience was fun & informative, & we learnt a lot. We would recommend this lesson & absolutely say don’t have a big breakfast! We brought some sushi away with us! We would also recommend getting a taxi if you aren’t in easy walking distance, for us it wasn’t an easy hop on just one train or bus & it was very hot, too hot to walk. Thank you Cooking Sun

Such a great wee class. Everything is perfectly prepped for you, excellent demonstrations are given and you get a chance to do everything yourself. Food was very tasty and our two teachers were very lovely.

This was literally so much fun! We are so glad we took the bento class because we felt like the recipes would be easy enough to replicate once we get home. The best part was learning to make the rolled egg. Not only did we leave with recipes to use, we also felt like we gained a lot of knowledge about general cooking protocols in Japan. The instructors gave us instruction throughout each step, not only on what to do in each recipe, but also which ingredients to look for in the store and how those ingredients are used in other recipes as well. Truly worth your money-- and a super fun time! Plus, you get to eat what you created at the end!
