This was a great tour! Richard gave insightful knowledge on the history and culture of the Geisha and Japanese people—both past and present. As we walked through the streets and Richard shared information about the different locations and people, you felt immersed into the culture. He also had great spots to take pictures of various locations and treated us to a good snack towards the end of the tour. I highly recommend others to book this tour.

As the title reads, please book if you are reading this. This tour was so special to me, my husband, and my best friend. It was a rainy day in Kyoto, we were poured on before arriving to the meeting point and Richard was so understanding and kind. We had an exhausting day of travel but were mentally and physically preparing for this 4 hour walking tour. Despite the weather and being 40-50F, Richard planned a special night for my group. We explored the city area and took us to the quiet roads that brought us a wave of emotion and feeling. He literally made me cry with how special this tour was and the words he spoke regarding Japanese intention and just being. We ate hot delicious Udon that warmed our souls. You never know if a special night will happen when you book this tour with Richard, so book now :)

Richard was incredibly knowledgeable and put together a truly unique, and as the tour title suggests, magical tour.

Most knowledgeable tour guide I ever had, as simple as that. I peppered Richard with questions during the tour, many of which were pretty off topic and/or on Japanese culture in general. He took the time to thoughtfully address anything I threw at him, and always had really insightful answers. Richard is half Japanese, being born and raised there, and half American, having lived there as an adult. He displayed an ability to see things from both the Japanese and "Western" perspective that I did not experience at any other point during my three weeks in Japan. The entirety of the tour's content was filled with all kinds of interesting details, and everything was always put elegantly into context and made understandable for those of us that see Japanese culture from an outsider's perspective. Even though it's a "Geisha tour" on the surface, it gives you lots of unique insights into Japanese history and culture in general. Should be a must-do for anyone visiting Kyoto.
