It was one of those experiences we’ll laugh about for a long time because it was so bad. First, the time to meet changed, then we couldn’t find the meeting place. We only went to two restaurants. At the first, we had five chicken dishes - nothing very special. At the next we had the most common sushi you can find at any sushi restaurant in the world. Instead of going to a third restaurant, we ate dessert standing up on the street. The dessert was actually the most interesting food we were served. Since we weren’t told we weren’t going to a third restaurant where I could use the bathroom, I was left standing on the street with no help from our guide who seemed oblivious to the fact that someone might need a bathroom. As I said, the experience was so bad - and so expensive for what we got - that we had to laugh.

Misaki was warm, enthusiastic, and incredibly fluent in both Japanese and English—her international experience really showed. She kept us updated early via WhatsApp, and the tour operator also communicated clearly through the Viator app. We visited some excellent spots, including two hidden gems we’d never have found on our own—clearly local favorites. The food was consistently delicious, and Misaki shared lots of insights about Kyoto’s culture and history, happily answering all our questions. Just a heads-up: this isn’t a fine dining degustation, which some might expect given the price. While it may feel on the higher side, what you’re really paying for is the access—Misaki’s local knowledge, the small group size (just six of us), and the chance to discover places you’d likely never stumble upon solo. That’s what made it worthwhile.

Jay was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide and helped us navigate through the crowded streets and food options of Gion. While the food we tried was pretty standard fare, it was nevertheless still delicious and helpful to have a guide to explain things to us.

Run - run away from this tour. Sure they advertise 15 dishes, but what they don't tell you is that the first 11 dishes are cheaply made chicken skewers from some cheap chain that poor students and school kids go to to fill their bellies. Then we got 1 pork, 1 sushi, and 1 tempura offering. Not bad, but certainly NOT worth the nearly $400 that I paid for such low quality 'local' delights. This is one of the worst tours I have ever taken. Run - runaway from this tour.

This was an excellent tour. Misaki our guide was very personable. The group was small so it felt more like going out with friends than a tour. There was lots of good food and drink, so much we could not finish all of it. This tour was a great introduction to the food of Kyoto.
