The church as we know it today was founded by Henry III in the 13th century, who ordered the demolition of Edward the Confessor’s royal palace and a monastery situated on the site. In its place, a new Gothic cathedral was built that was consecrated in 1269: From now on, by decree of the King of England, Westminster Abbey was to be a place for the coronation and burial of monarchs.

5.00Buying the ticket in advance made the visit to westminister abbey so much smoother. I skipped the long ticket line and went straight inside, which saved a lot of time. For price, it felt considering how much history is packed inside.

It provided access to a remarkable site filled with centuries of history, royal tombs, and beautiful stained glass windows. The audio guide (if included or rented) enhanced the visit, making it easy to learn about the Abbey’s significance at each point.

5.00We spent a couple of hours wandering through Abbey, taking in the beautiful strained glass windows, and stopping by the graves of famous historical figures like Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin. Audio guide was working perfectly, we loved the fact that we could pause and rewind if we needed more time to soak it all in.
