This (along with Te Pā Tū) is a MUST DO in Rotorua. We were fortunate enough to have Maria as a guide. She is one of the 35 residents that actually live in the village in the home she grew up in. Her Great-Grandmother was one of the original guides. She provided fascinating insight into the culture and the life of the villagers past and present. The village is located on a geothermal plateau that they use to cook, bathe and heat their homes. Tour was about 1.5 hours and we even got to taste some corn that was cooked in one of the vents. You can also take a self-guided walk through a geothermal landscape and see the Pōhutu Geyser - largest in the Southern Hemisphere, bubbling mud pits and lots of steam vents.

Our guide was a Maori lady who shared impressive stories of cosmology, traditions and genealogy. She also took the time to explain key Maori concepts and words. We were able to visit different areas of the village including the entrance of the Marae and the communal geothermal bathing and cooking areas. We enjoyed a complimentary snack, geothermally cooked pieces of corn. Finally, we were able to access the extraordinary Geyser viewpoints which were ashtonishing. We would book this experience again. 100% recommended.

We stopped here on a whim, and it didn't disappoint. We chose a one hour guided tour which lasted 90 minutes. Our lovely guide Rini was raised in the village, and explained some of the village history and her childhood experiences living there. We were lucky enough to see the village geysers putting on a display.

We had a great tour guide named Teau (not sure if I spelt that correctly) she showed us all around the village, showing us all the amazing sites and added interesting facts about the places history that only she and her family would know, was well worth the price, will definitely come back in the future🤙
