Rob was an absolute pro! Clear, safe, fun, informative, and professional. First, logistics. Bike tours in cities make me nervous, but Rob knew every possible (intuitive) signal for his riders, cars, and pedestrians, so I could enjoy looking around without constant stress. The ride was challenging, but extremely fun (I used electric, my husband did fine but is an experienced biker). Rob also maximized info, answering streams of questions while riding and during frequent, shaded breaks. Rob also communicated with us clearly before and after the tour. Second, content. Rob was equally comfortable and clear communicating with locals and sharing information with us. He’s an American who has lived in Japan for decades, so his English and Japanese were perfect. He also knew a lot about the sites we visited (including tricks to save time and avoid crowds), and told us if he didn’t know something or if an answer was just his opinion (he takes academic rigor seriously). My husband particularly liked asking him about the Japanese language, and Rob was able to finally answer some questions that had stumped other guides. We learned so many fascinating things about Rob and from his thoughtful insights into Japanese culture. Being on bikes, we also got to ride through some beautiful parts of Kyoto that we would have missed just aiming for tourist destinations. We enjoyed many of the parks, neighborhoods, and landscapes as much as the destinations. Other high points: Rob customized tour content on the spot, letting us cut one spot and replace it with another. Lunch was great. Snacks were awesome! Rob always had water for us. Plus, he took photos so we could spend our time being in the moment. My only complaint: the cost of the electric bike was a bit high (roughly $40 USD), and is likely important for many riders. But that’s probably not on Rob. Overall, we’d highly recommend this tour, especially with Rob.

This was a great all-around bike tour. We did visit some highlights and managed to avoid some crowded touristy spots at the end. Our tour guide Rob was awesome. He knows Kyoto very well and taught us about Japan culture. He even shared some of the history as well. We were able to see so much in a day, including some of the suburban and agricultural areas. Rob knew great photo spots and shared excellent photos after the tour. I definitely have to mention that our udon lunch was delicious too. This is a long day of active riding and walking. So, if you're not quite in shape, make sure to rent the e-bikes ahead of time. Otherwise, you'll get a little bit of a workout. My husband's legs barely made it to the end, but he had quite a memorable day. It was all worth it. Highly recommend this tour if you like riding bikes and if you only have a few days in Kyoto. This is truly a great way to see the town.

Kuddos to Cass for being an excellent tour guide! My husband and I are in our mid 60’s and love to bike so we are very used to riding. We only had a day in Kyoto so I thought his would be great for we would see twice as much as a bus tour and meet some new people along with getting exercise. The tour was excellent! Cass was extremely knowledgeable and answered many of my husband’s inquiring questions about the culture. We had about 8 stops and included a delish local lunch. The bikes were in excellent shape. We opted for an e-bike, but really didn’t need it even with a good climb to the Water Temple. There is nothing better that being with a great guide, great people, learning something about a different culture and doing this all in one day. This tour was SO much better than those in our tour group that took their guided bus tour. They saw only ¼ of what we experienced. Definitely book this if you want a great overview of Kyoto in a short time. Well worth the cost. Thanks Cass…keep on biking!

We've been on more than a dozen bicycle tours around the world and this is the best one by a long shot. Rob takes great pains to keep improving the tour and provides not only information on the history but also great insightful about the culture of Japan thanks to his 14 years living there. I would call him the thinking person's tour guide!
